What are some substances that are
abused?
 Tobacco is one of the most commonly used substances
world-wide. The chemical that causes addiction tobacco
addiction is nicotine
 Alcohol, in the form of beer, wine or spirits delays
reactions and impairs judgment when consumed in large
quantities
 Glue, nail polish and gasoline vapour are examples of
some substances called inhalants because abusers smell
them to get a ‘buzz’
 Cocaine is from a plant called ‘coca’. In ancient times,
the Incas chewed the leaves to get a burst of energy.
 Tablets, pills, capsules and liquids that are prescribed
by doctors are commonly misused
