The problem of water and gas coning has plagued the petroleum industry for decades. Water or gas encroachment in oil zone and thus simultaneous production of oil & water or oil & gas is a major technical, environmental and economic problems associated with oil and gas production. This can limit the productive life of the oil and gas wells and can cause severe problems including corrosion of tubulars, fine migration, hydrostatic loading etc. The environmental impact of handling, treating and disposing of the produced water can seriously affect the economics of the production. Commonly, the reservoirs have an aquifer beneath the zone of hydrocarbon. While producing from oil zone, there develops a low pressure zone as a result of which the water zone starts coning upwards and gas zone cones down towards the production perforation in oil zone and thus reducing the oil production. Pressure enhanced capillary transition zone enlargement around the wellbore is responsible for the concurrent production. This also results in the loss of water drive and gas drive to a certain extent. Numerous technologies have been developed to control unwanted water and gas coning. In order to design an effective strategy to control the coning of oil or gas, it is important to understand the mechanism of coning of oil and gas in reservoirs by developing a model of it. Non-Darcy flow effect (NDFE), vertical permeability, aquifer size, density of well perforation, and flow behind casing increase water coning/inflow to wells in homogeneous gas reservoirs with bottom water are important factors to consider. There are several methods to slow down coning of water and/or gas such as producing at a certain critical rate, polymer injection, Downhole Water Sink (DWS) technology etc. Shubham Saxena B.Tech. petroleum Engineering IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

Oil 101: Introduction to Oil and Gas - Upstream What is Upstream? This Midstream content is derived from our Oil 101 Upstream ebook and can be found in our oil and gas learning community. This Upstream module includes the following sections (use the links below for quick access): -Introduction to Upstream -Upstream Business Characteristics -Oilfield Services -Reserves – Formation and Importance -Production – The First Step in Adding Value -The Unconventional Future of Upstream Upstream What is Upstream? Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are segmented and organized according to business segment, assets, or function. The upstream segment of the business is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering and producing crude oil and natural gas. The upstream segment is all about wells: where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint. Exploration The exploration sector involves obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owners of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas, and conducting necessary geological and geophysical (G&G) surveys required to explore for (and hopefully find) economic accumulations of oil or gas. Drilling There is always uncertainty in the geological and geophysical survey results. The only way to be sure that a prospect is favorable is to drill an exploratory well. Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become an oil or gas well. This work is done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. Production The production sector of the upstream segment maximizes recovery of petroleum from subsurface reservoirs.

Reservoir engineers cannot capture full value from waterflood projects on their own. Cross-functional participation from earth sciences, production, drilling, completions, and facility engineering, and operational groups is required to get full value from waterfloods. Waterflood design and operational case histories of cross-functional collaboration are provided that have improved life cycle costs and increased recovery for onshore and offshore waterfloods. The role that water quality, surveillance, reservoir processing rates, and layered reservoir management has on waterflood oil recovery and life cycle costs will be clarified. Techniques to get better performance out of your waterflood will be shared.

The seamless steel pipe industry is almost one century old. The prime reason for the development was provided by transportation sector. Petroleum sector consumes largest quantities of seamless tubes. The Indian seamless tube industry is about 55 Years old. Seamless pipe as the name suggests is a pipe without a seam or a weld-joint in contrast to Seam or Welded pipe. In a Seam or Welded pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint. Whereas the seamless pipe does not have any such joint and thus has uniform structure & strength all over the pipe body. Thus the seamless pipe can withstand higher pressure, higher temperature, higher mechanical stress & corrosive atmosphere and find wide applications in Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, Chemical, Fertilizer, Power, Automotive, Bearing, Mechanical & Structural applications. In March 2013, the Italian government approved the National Energy Strategy (NES), a paper which sets out the main goals and the top priorities to be pursued in the coming years to support the growth of the Italian economic system and the energy market. According to NES, Italy has significant oil and gas reserves (i.e.: the largest in Europe after the Nordic countries) and development of the hydrocarbon industry is one of Italian goal/top priorities. This presentation includes a quick outlook and summary of the main content of the NES with respect to the upstream oil&gas market .

LENR technology could dramatically expand future reserve-based debt financing opportunities in the global oil & gas industry. Key take-aways: - Ultralow energy neutron reactions (LENRs) are new type of clean, green CO2-free nuclear energy source that has huge energy densities, vastly lower costs versus fission or fusion, and could enable truly sustainable economic growth. - Development and utilization of LENR thermal sources for process heat could help reduce upstream and downstream costs for oil & gas producers and significantly decrease CO2 emission footprints for the entire oil & gas industry. - Should be possible to develop green LENR fuels derived from aromatic fractions present in oil, coal, and biomass as well as C-aromatics produced from natural gas; these would be suitable for use in many applications that include stationary/portable power generation and vehicular propulsion. - Oil & gas companies that successfully employ technology to produce LENR fuels for sale to customers can: (1) exploit a major strategic diversification opportunity to expand beyond their present product lines and (2) greatly enhance their capacity for RBL debt financing as a result of very substantial increases in net present economic value of their proven fossil fuel reserves. - Existing crude oil refineries could be modified to add capabilities for production of LENR fuels in parallel with traditional industry products. - Not competitive; LENRs are a strategic opportunity for oil & gas companies.

This two-day workshop supported the Government of Viet Nam in building the necessary capacity to advance its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process. The workshop closely focused on building National Adaptation Plans in the agricultural sector through multi-stakeholder collaboration, and increased knowledge and capacity on a number of topics including: prioritization of adaptation options, cost-benefit analysis, overview of the broad-based nature of climate change adaption impacts, analysis of challenges, and creation of an open discussion with key stakeholders on defining a road-map for the NAP process. The workshop was delivered using discussions and case studies to enhance interactive learning for participants, with supporting presentations by GiZ and SNV.
