3. FOREST:
a large tract of land covered with
trees and underbrush; woodland.
ECOLOGY:
Ecology is the science that studies ecosystems.
4. FOREST ECOLOGY
is the scientific study of the interrelated patterns,
processes, flora, fauna and ecosystems in forests.
A forest ecosystem is a natural woodland unit consisting of all
plants, animals and micro-organisms (Biotic components) in that
area functioning together with all of the non-living physical
(abiotic) factors of the environment.
5. MANAGEMENT OF FORESTS
The management of forests is known as forestry, silviculture, and forest management.
This includes management for aesthetics, fish, recreation,
water, wilderness, wildlife, wood products, forest genetic
resources and other forest resource values.
6. Methods of Managing Forest
Afforestation- Afforestation is the establishment
of a forest or stand of trees in an area where there was
no forest.
Reforestation-Reforestation is the restocking of
existing forests and woodlands which have been
depleted, an effect of deforestation.
7. Sustainable Forest Management
-Sustainable forest management (SFM) is the
management of forests according to the principles
of sustainable development.
Avoiding Wildfire
-A wildfire is any uncontrolled fire in combustible
vegetation that occurs in the countryside or a
wilderness area.
8. CONSERVATION OF FORESTS
conservation is the practice of planning and maintaining forested areas for
the benefit and sustainability of future generations.
Forest conservation involves the upkeep of the
natural resources within a forest that are beneficial
to both humans and the ecosystem.
9. CONSERVATION OF FORESTS
-Massive afforestation work should be undertaken to cover large areas of land with
useful plants.
-Large scale cutting of forest trees should be stopped.
-Forest fire should be prevented.
-Overgrazing by cattle, horses, sheep's and goats should be prevented.
-Forest must be protected from insects and pest.
-All activities leading to soil erosion should be controlled.
-Air water and soil pollution should be reduced
-Forest nurseries should be established on a large scale.
-People should be made aware of the impacts of the forest on their life through
advertisements, TV, radio and plays.
-Existing laws to protect national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and biosphere reserves
should be properly implemented.
