For years, we had to write boring, duplicated code for our http endpoints: one for the frontend-side and one for the backend-side. Microservices added even more duplicated code. Once these got out of sync, we had to fix them manually. All of this frustrating "monkey coding" keeps us away from more important tasks. Swagger or OpenAPI is a set of tools to eliminate this problem. Supporting different languages and frameworks, Swagger’s code generator creates server stubs and clients of your API. It also provides a frontend where we can call the endpoints directly with predefined request data. Say farewell to Postman and other. A nice editor to define the API wraps it up. I will demonstrate the usefulness of Swagger and OpenAPI using an application based on Express and Angular. You will quickly see how these tools can free you to focus on code that matters.

Alkacon is introducing the new Acacia Editor in OpenCms 8.5. It replaces the old editor for XML structured contents and will revolutionize the way editors create content in OpenCms. The Acacia Editor allows unobtrusive "in place" editing for quick content changes within pages. It also provides a very much improved user interface for form based editing. Acasia makes OpenCms content editing easy, intuitive and a lot faster. In this session, Tobias will show how to enable "in place" editing on your templates with Acasia. He will explain how Acacia utilizes RDF annotations to inject it's editing capabilities into your page. Moreover, you can use these annotations to enhance your content semantically and make search engines happy. Tobias will also introduce the widgets for the new editor. These offer plenty of different editing options and are easy to configure. For more advanced use cases they can also be configured dynamically and use settings depending on the current user context. And if this still doesn't satisfy your needs, you can write your very own widget using either the native JavaScript interface or a Google Web Toolkit based interface.

After building, deploying and scaling a dozen on products with the Django + GraphQL + SPA (React) setup, we have come to understand what works and what does not. In this talk, I will share our findings on how to do the same. I will be using a simplified StackOverflow clone for demonstration. First, I will introduce Python-Graphene (and few other related libraries), the library that is used to build GraphQL endpoints. Then the talk will focus on how to structure your Django GraphQL project. Share the toolchain (a few management command scripts) that are handy to export your constants & GraphQL schemas to be used with your SPA. Integrating with an SPA (React for demo purpose) Auth, API calls. Then I will talk about how you go about deploying your API using 2 different strategies: 1. Docker compose / swarm (Vendor independent, non-production workloads) 2. AWS Fargate (Vendor dependant, production workloads, serverless containers) And a cost-effective and highly scale-able deployment strategy for your SPA (using AWS S3, CloudFront and ACM).

What does it look like for a team to adopt Docker and GitLab CI/CD when they haven’t been using them previously? With our first CI/CD run we decided to fully commit ourselves to the GitOps philosophy and during the upcoming years, we hit a lot of obstacles. But, these experiences welded us together even more. By using GitLab we invented a lot of new tools but the most important thing was that we have built it up together, bottom up, with us as individuals. Follow my talk and see how we started our adventure through the endless space of the GitLab galaxy and listen how we are using our experience, our knowledge and our team friendship to build up creative innovative solutions today. You will see that together with human friendship you can go where no one has gone before.

We can build anything we want with PHP, be it a small little blog for ourselves to a giant world-spanning social media network. There are times though that we do not need all of the dynamic goodness that PHP brings and we just need a site that sits there. Sculpin is a static site generator that leverages the power of PHP and Twig to allow developers to quickly generate flat HTML sites, but completely automate the process of stitching all of that HTML together. We’ll quickly run through getting started with Sculpin and the power that it provides.

OSGi Community Event 2018 Presentation by Bruce Jackson (Myriad) Abstract: Node-RED is often used as a protyping tool for IoT systems. However, there are also a large number of OSGi components that have already been built to interface to devices, sensors and systems. In this talk I will show how two completely different runtime environments (OSGi and Node-RED) can be combined into a single platform for prototyping (and more) combining the strengths of both languages and systems. Being able to quickly and simply prototype IoT application is extremely useful, and to this end many people have adopted Node-Red, a Node.js based runtime with extensive support for plugins to interface to various IoT hardware and protocols. However, this requires these services/protocols to be developed in Javascript, and there is already a significant body of code developed in Java/OSGi that it would be desirable to re-use. The talk will explain how it is possible to: Create and manage a Node-Red runtime from within an OSGi bundle Share OSGi components and object into the Node-Red runtime Interact and build Node-Red flows that exchange data and call methods between Node.js and OSGi This is obviously useful for the original purpose: prototyping IoT systems, but also demonstrates some interesting techniques for bridging between different languages and runtimes.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers” at a webinar hosted by Progress Semaphore on April 16, 2024. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs. Extending taxonomies to a semantic layer can be a game-changing solution, allowing you to connect information silos, alleviate knowledge gaps, and derive new insights. Hedden, who specializes in taxonomy design and implementation, presented how the value of taxonomies shouldn’t reside in silos but be integrated with ontologies into a semantic layer. Learn about: - The essence and purpose of taxonomies and ontologies in information and knowledge management; - Advantages of semantic layers leveraging organizational taxonomies; and - Components and approaches to creating a semantic layer, including the integration of taxonomies and ontologies

Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability. In this session, participants gained insights about the following: Most common types of AI categories and use cases; Recommended steps to design and implement taxonomies and ontologies, ensuring they evolve effectively and support the organization’s search objectives; Taxonomy and ontology design considerations and best practices; Real-world AI applications that illustrated the value of taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs; and Tools, roles, and skills to design and implement AI-powered search solutions.
