MCRB and FFI held a week of multistakeholder workshops on sustainable tourism in Tanintharyi with a two day discussion focussed on Myeik District at the J&J Hotel on 15/16 May attended by around 60 local people involved in the tourism industry, and international and Myanmar tourism experts, followed by two days of discussion at Victoria Cliff Hotel in Kawthaung attended by around 90 stakeholders. Bintan CBT Lessons Learned
• Strong focus on building community micro-enterprise (CE) capacity and organizational
structure.
• This includes the creation of a legal entity (in Indonesia: Yayasan=Foundation) for the
CE to conduct tourism business activities.
• Business entity under supervision of an elected Board of Community (BOC), control
over issues such as tenure and profit sharing amongst participants.
• The process applied for product development is participatory, involving the local
community in the identification of ectourism resources and the entire prodcut
development process.
• Provision of soft loans by the CE to community members to facilitate participation and
encourage entrepreneurship.
• As with all businesses, CE are evolving and sometimes this includes failure. Strong
community cohesion and participation is critical.
• After 13 years, in 2017, one of the two community ventures is still successfully
operating with 40 full-time members, and generating close to USD 160,000.00 in
revenue per year. This provides livelihood to between 150 to 200 community members.
