2. For this project the user experience of a dance
school in my hometown, Divine Dance Center, is
analysed. The focus is on the classes for adults.
A non-digital experience is chosen intentionally to
focus on making real life and offline experiences
more exciting.
Marion Elskamp opened Divine Dance Center in
the autumn of 2017 after years of dancing
professionally and teaching at other schools.
Despite the presence of two other dance schools in
a tiny town, Divine Dance Center soon began to
flourish and attract students of all age groups and
different dance disciplines. Despite the success of
Marion and her school, I feel there is much to
improve upon by focussing stronger on what is
motivating for most students.

Poster Campaign
A poster campaign aimed at priming the members towards trying despite chance of failure, working hard and being
courageous when facing a new challenge in dancing. Posters should be in both the lounge room and studio.
1, 2, -8
Once upon a Dance
As a group students can suggest a socially relevant theme that they feel passionate about. The teacher will choreograph a
dance as a story around this theme.
1, 5
Flexi-class
A Flexi-class is introduced for those members who are behind or struggling, and those who seek extra challenge. This
class focusses on stretching, muscle building and specific techniques (per request).
2, -8
Focus Theme
Per semester there is a clear focus on a new challenge in regards to dancing, which is clearly communicated to all
members (e.g. mind-body communication, balance, a new technique). This can be open for suggestions from members.
2, 4
Performance Milestone Once a year members have the option to be judged by an external professional to get grading or a diploma. 2, 4
Short Quiz
During the lesson the teacher quickly and casually quizzes the members on the correct terminology of certain movements
or techniques (often in French or English in a Dutch speaking town).
2, 5, 7
Design your own
Challenge
Members can design their own, measurable, challenge with deadline. Other members can sign up to be accountability
partners.
2, 3, 5
Reserve the Room
Members have the option to reserve the studio after the last class to practice their dancing alone or together, design their
own dance or present it to other members and/or friends.
3, 4, 5, 7
26. Name Description CD
Clap-Slap-Clap
Introduce a more playful way to practice or train by disconnecting from the exercise and only focussing on the game
element that is applied. (E.g. when learning a handstand a dancer will be squatted, clap their hands, slap them firmly on
the ground and throw their legs up in an attempt to do a handstand while saying “clap”. After a few tries the dancer tries
clap-slap-clap-clap and so on, extending the time the legs are up in the air. Each failure to do the handstand becomes a
fun experience and, if done in a group, cause for a great group-dynamic.)
2, 3, 5, -8
Show and Dance
Every year a big night is organised for members (possibly also for friends and family) where members can show their own
choreography or performance.
3, 5, 7
Merchandise
The current collection of DDC black t-shirts in a limited amount of sizes and black hoodies, is expanded upon with
t-shirts in all sizes and the addition of one or two extra colors to choose from. With the options to make a certain color
only available to members who follow classes in a certain discipline.
3, 4, 5, 6
Dancer of the Month
Every month the teachers pick one student to receive this honor. The student gets a DDC t-shirt in a different color than
those for sale and their name or photograph is displayed in the lounge room.
1, 2, 5
Dance to my Song
Option to suggest a song to be used in class. The teacher picks a top five that will be open for votes by all students of that
class. The winning song will be used next semester.
3, 5, 7
Volunteering Introduce a sign-up sheet where members can sign up to help with small tasks in and around the dance school. 1, 4, 5
Recruit & Receive

The next member to recruit another member gets the mystery gift that is always on display in the lounge room. 4, 5, 6, 7
34. WORD OF THANKS
I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work on my level 1 submission
with the support of the videos on Octalysis Prime and the community
on Slack. Specifically Victoria who provided me with a ton of helpful
and supportive feedback on my first version (thank you).
To all of you who are reading this, thank you for taking the time and
energy to read my submission. And for those of you who are willing to
provide me with feedback, much obliged!
Stay excellent.
- Name
There are things I did not list in this analysis. The main reason is probably that I missed it or did not think of it.
The other reason is that this is a small and starting dance school in a small town. Some things I did not list simply
because I think they would not work in these circumstances. Possibilities are limited and I chose to focus on those
things that can be implemented in reality.
