Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection. They did not initially recognize him. He showed them his hands and feet with the nail wounds to prove it was really him in the flesh. He ate broiled fish to further convince them. He opened their minds to understand how the Old Testament prophecies foretold his suffering and resurrection. He led them to Bethany, blessed them, and then ascended to heaven. The disciples became witnesses of Jesus' resurrection and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
6. 36 As they were talking about these things,
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
Jesus himself stood among them, and
said to them, “Peace be to you!”
7. Zechariah predicted that
Jesus would “guide our
feet into the way of peace.”
~ The Gospel of Luke 1:79
The angels promised that Jesus
would bring peace on earth.
~ Luke 2:14
8. “Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give to you.”
~ Jesus of Nazareth in
The Gospel of Luke 14:27
9. 36 As they were talking about these things,
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
Jesus himself stood among them, and
said to them, “Peace be to you!” 37 But
they were startled and frightened and
thought they had seen a spirit.
10. 28 And he said to them, “Why are you
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
troubled, and why do doubts arise in your
hearts…?
11. 28 And he said to them, “Why are you
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
troubled, and why do doubts arise in your
hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet,
that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For
a spirit does not have flesh and bones as
you see that I have.” 40 And when he said
this, he showed them his hands and his
feet.
12. “Unless I see in his hands the marks of the nails,
and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and
place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
~ Thomas the “Doubting Disciple”
in the Gospel of John 20:24-29
13. Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace
be with you….” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your
finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand,
and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
~ Thomas the “Doubting Disciple”
in the Gospel of John 20:24-29
14. ~ The Apostle John
in the 1 John 1:1
“…we have seen with our
own eyes…, we have
looked upon and touched
with our own hands….
15. The wound-marks remain
on the resurrection body
of Jesus Christ as a
permanent reminder of
everything he has done
for our salvation. His
hands and feet show the
Father that he has paid
the full price for sin. At the
same time, they show us
that our sins are fully
forgiven.
16. In fact, the glorified
wounds of Jesus show us
the whole gospel. The
marks on his body bear
witness to the cross where
he died. But his hands
and feet belong to the
same resurrection body
that came out of the
empty tomb.
17. These are the two great
facts of the gospel: Jesus
died, and then in the
same body he rose again.
These two facts give us
the good news of our
salvation: by the cross
our sins are forgiven, and
by the empty tomb we
have the free gift of
resurrection life.
18. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
and were marveling, he said to them,
“Have you anything to eat?” 42 They gave
him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took
it and ate it before them.
19. “They put him to death
by hanging him on a
tree, but God raised him
on the third day and
made him to appear…
to us who had been
chosen by God as
eyewitnesses, who ate
and drank with him after
he rose from the dead.”
~ The Apostle Peter
in Acts 10:40-41
20. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
words that I spoke to you while I was still
with you, that everything written about me
in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and
the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he
opened their minds to understand the
Scriptures…,
21. ~ The Gospel of Luke 24:26-27
He said to them, “Was it
not necessary that the
Christ should suffer
these things and enter
into his glory?” And
beginning with Moses
and all the Prophets, he
interpreted to them in all
the Scriptures the things
concerning himself…
22. ~ The Gospel of Luke 24:32
“They said to each other,
“Did not our hearts burn
within in us…while he
opened to us the
Scriptures?”
23. …he opened their minds
to understand the Scriptures….
~ The Gospel of Luke 24:45
“
24. 46 …and said to them, “Thus it is written,
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
That the Christ should suffer and on the
third day rise from the dead, 47 and that
repentance for the forgiveness of sins
should be proclaimed in his name to all
nations beginning in Jerusalem….
26. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
And behold, I am sending the promise of
my Father upon you. But stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on
high.
27. 50 And he led them out as far as Bethany,
The Gospel of Luke 13:36-53
and lifting up his hands he blessed them.
51 While he blessed them, he parted from
them and was carried up into heaven. 52
And they worshiped him and returned to
Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were
continually in the temple blessing God.
33. In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all
that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when
he was taken up, after he had given commands
through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had
chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his
suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during
forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God….
34. “[This confession, namely that Jesus is Lord]
is distinguished in that it is a commitment to a
belief about the meaning of the whole of human
experience in its entirety--namely, the belief
that this meaning is to be found in the person
of Jesus Christ, incarnate, crucified, risen,
and destined to reign over all things.”
“
~ Lesslie Newbigin
35. May you always
confess with your
mouth that Jesus is
Lord & believe in your
heart that God raised
him from the dead.
