2. PET or polyethylene terephthalate is a type of polyester that is used
to make several items like bottles, jars, combs, bean bags and rope.
It is widely used for packaging of beverages, detergents, edible oil,
cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and more. It is also used for the
manufacture of paper. It is shatter-proof, economical, non-reactive,
clear, strong and lightweight plastic that is fully recyclable.
Thus, it be used to make tote bags, carpets, fiberfill material in
winter clothing etc. In order to make food grade plastic, it has to be
hydrolysed to monomers that are purified and then re-polymerised.
The recycling can be carried out either by chemically breaking down
the components or thoroughly washing and remelting. It does not
react with food and is a very strong and inert material. It is resistant
to micro-organisms and does not get degraded. It is for this reason
that it is the preferred material for packaging of food and
beverages.

3. Through extensive research, it has been proved that it is safe for use
in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and medical applications. PET is
approved by various health and safety organisations like FDA to be
safe for contact with food and beverages. Also, it does not contain
bisphenol-A(BPA) or phthalates (phthalate ester plasticisers) as PET
is a high molecular weight polyester made from terephthalic acid.
It is easy to identify that something is made of PET by checking if it
has a recycling symbol. The resin identification code for PET is 1
which is also usually added on the product's exterior.
