India accounts for 90 % (approx) of the people in South
Asia who practice open defecation
Census 2001, 36.4% of the households had access to latrine, which increased
to 46.9% in Census 2011
Only 53 % of the population wash hands with soap after
defecation
Only 38 % wash hands with soap before eating
Only 30 % wash hands with soap before preparing food
Only 6 % of rural children less than five years of age use toilets

private sector initiatives in development & human welfare initiatives of
Humanitarian organisations
Concretize an agenda for development that addresses issues related to
human development, especially in a young country like India where
demographic dividend can become a crises if not nurtured well
Contribute to peoples’ welfare by universalizing access to basic
services at affordable costs and promote equitable growth that trickles
down to the bottom of the pyramid

12. FICCI’s contribution to development agenda
To provide a platform to leverage Indian creativity, expertise, and resources to identify and
scale innovative solutions being developed and tested in India for the benefit of Bottom of
the Pyramid (BoP) Population.
A joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India; Lockheed Martin
Corporation; Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, FICCI; Stanford Graduate School of
Business and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas , is aimed to accelerate innovative
Indian technologies into the global markets
Working in areas of Skill development, Affordable Housing Projects, Geo Spatial
Technologies and Clean Water & Sanitation for Uttarakhand Rehabilitation and is working
closely with the State Government and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in
identifying and implementing the rehabilitation work
