DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING &
LEARNING LISTENING SKILL
History & overview
 According to International Listening Association:
- 45% of a student’s day is spent listening
- Students are expected to acquire 85% of the knowledge they have by
listening
- Only 2% of the population ever received formal listening instruction
 Students use listening skill in every subject and it will benefit them
throughout life
Listening in digital world
 We are now living in a media-saturated age
- where how new technologies are affecting our perspectives on listening
and literacy
- how technologies are:
1) changing our view of what listening is
2) changing our view of the relationship between listening and literacy
and
3) changing our view of what a literacy program should be
Listening & technology
 Audiobooks provide students an alternative way to acquire knowledge
and an opportunity to add a dimension to reading through listening
 Digital technology allows interactive learning to take place
Recent curriculum developments relating to listening
 Training in these skills has traditionally been neglected by many higher
education courses
 Purpose of this training in the higher education curriculum:
- to produce graduates who can demonstrate skills based knowledge and
competences.
 As language teaching has moved toward comprehension-based
approaches, listening to learn has become increasingly important
in the English as a second language (ESL) classroom (Van Duzer,
1997)
 The central role of listening in this discipline has generated a lot of
research into the processes involved in second language listening
and comprehension (Field, 1998; 2004).
 Considerable attention has also been given to the development of
techniques and tools to encourage the development of skills in this
area (Wilson, 2003; Hulstijn, 2003).

History & overview  According to International Listening Association: - 45% of a student’s day is spent listening - Students are expected to acquire 85% of the knowledge they have by listening - Only 2% of the population ever received formal listening instruction  Students use listening skill in every subject and it will benefit them throughout life
  • 3. Listening in digital world  We are now living in a media-saturated age - where how new technologies are affecting our perspectives on listening and literacy - how technologies are: 1) changing our view of what listening is 2) changing our view of the relationship between listening and literacy and 3) changing our view of what a literacy program should be
  • 4. Listening & technology  Audiobooks provide students an alternative way to acquire knowledge and an opportunity to add a dimension to reading through listening  Digital technology allows interactive learning to take place
  • 5. Recent curriculum developments relating to listening  Training in these skills has traditionally been neglected by many higher education courses  Purpose of this training in the higher education curriculum: - to produce graduates who can demonstrate skills based knowledge and competences.
  • 6.  As language teaching has moved toward comprehension-based approaches, listening to learn has become increasingly important in the English as a second language (ESL) classroom (Van Duzer, 1997)  The central role of listening in this discipline has generated a lot of research into the processes involved in second language listening and comprehension (Field, 1998; 2004).  Considerable attention has also been given to the development of techniques and tools to encourage the development of skills in this area (Wilson, 2003; Hulstijn, 2003).
