7. MYCOTOXINS ISSUE
According to FAO up to 25% of grains is lost every year
because of contaminations (e.g. diseases, fungi, insects).
Toxins are very dangerous for human and animal health,
allowed limits in ppb.
Globally the Authorities and consumers have become
more and more strict as regards to their expectations of
7
more and more strict as regards to their expectations of
food and feed safety, in EU especially after crop 2012.
In case of contamination the cargo is loosing value and in
some cases may have to be destroyed.
Consequence of non compliance can be a big multi
million dollars issue and our clients were asking us for
sophisticated instrument for risk mitigation and proving
that they are managing food safety issues.
8. MYCOTOXINS MONITORING PROGRAM
We continue for 2nd year to screen corn for following Mycotoxins:
Aflatoxin ( B1 and total), Ochratoxin, Deoxynivalenol, Zearalenone,
Fumonisins, HT-2/T-2.
Following certification schemes including GMP+, OVOCOM, GTP
(Cocerial), AIC, EFISC, QS confirmed that it’s good Early Warning
Notification System and risk mitigation tool.

List of countries for monitoring:
• Ukraine
• Bulgaria
• Hungary
• Croatia
• Romania
• Russia
• Serbia
• Slovakia
• Czech Republic
9. DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM
The distribution of number of samples per country was done according to
number of alerts from above mentioned countries.
In case we observe any contamination we always go deeper, test additional
samples to localize the root cause of the problem.
Sampling was done by qualified SGS inspectors following GAFTA sampling
rules.
9
Sampling period: during 3-6 months after harvesting depending on
conditions/situation in a country.
Samples will be taken from fields before harvesting or after harvest at 1st
collection points or during transshipment operations.
Analysis performed in 5 labs located in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania
and Serbia using LC-MS/MS and HPLC.
Access to screening results per country was given in Excel format.
Updates with available results were sent to subscribers once a week.

Big issues in ….. with Fumonisin, DON and Zearalenone. We also
detected some presence of Aflatoxin, up to now it’s below feed limit of
10ppb for unprocessed corn, but above the limit for food.
Special attention is required in ……, ……. and …… for control of
Fumonisin and DON.

20. Our program can be a good risk mitigation tool for our clients, as it helps
them to avoid many problems and will give a clear understanding how to
address the issue – where to reinforce control, how and for which toxins.
Further development will include geographical expansion and Pre-harvest
monitoring (ideally based on prediction models).
