5. Why study the weather?
• Advance warnings of extreme
events
• Planning
• Comfort: People like to know
whether to take umbrella, wear
warm coat….
• Climate change
6. July - different places - different
weather
• Port Blair, India
• 400mm
• Hot 25 to 27
degrees C
• Humid
• Canberra, Aust.
• 50mm
• Cold -1 to 10
degrees C
• Frost
7. It’s all about Energy
• Energy from the sun
• Storage of energy
• Redistribution of energy
Why is weather different in different parts of the world?
Sun’s rays most heat and energy where they have travelled shorter distance – at equator (spring and autumn equinox)
Earth hotter at equator than at poles
Difference in temperature causes differences in atmospheric pressure which leads to atmospheric circulation.
Low pressure just means less air per sq km
It is actually a little more complicated but same principle applies!
Heating of earth/ sea creates areas of high and low pressure. Just remember – hot air rises – making less pressure on the surface. Therefore a low pressure. Atmospheric circulation - Air moves from high pressure to low pressure.
Creates weather!!! Very important for air circulation and energy transfer around the Earth.
Lines on the weather map with numbers join places of equal pressure and are called isobars
One other point – air moves in different directions around lows and highs, depending which hemisphere you are in.
Northern hemisphere – low moving in anticlock wise direction. Southern hemisphere – low moving in clockwise direction
Advanced techniques of meterology – can now see radar, water temp etc, real time thunderstorms etc .. Have a look at bureau of meteorology website.
Earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees to verticle
As we have seen - Weather is often presented on a chart. Synoptic chart for Australia Tuesday 17 March 2015 – note highs, lows, tropical cyclone Nathan, cold front
Some important symbols on weather chart. Isobars – line joining places of equal pressure

Summer land gets hot – hot air rises – makes low pressure at ground level. Air moves from higher pressure to lower. Reverse in winter.
Winter weather patterns – Asia this is what it looks like
Summer weather patterns – note strong winds from ocean to land – cyclone season and monsoon season
Is this a summer or winter weather pattern for Asia?
