Georgia Libraries Conference (formerly Ga COMO).

Presenter: Amy Stalker Presented at the virtual Georgia Libraries Conference in October 2020. Want a fulfilling work experience with co-workers who are engaged and connected? Building positive team culture is no easy task – and it’s something that needs regular attention as the needs and interests of the team evolve. Strong teams weather difficult times better – and with the COVID situation, we all know there are difficult times ahead. But how do you get there and where do you start? As an early-career manager, I would like to share some things our team has done and is doing to stay connected and engaged at the HUMAN level.

Over two hundred years of collective experience has gone into this document. Those who contributed are not only talented individuals with a wealth of knowledge, but also compassionate professionals who remember what it's like to be a student. They've all taken time out of their already overtaxed schedules to share a lesson based on their own personal experience. Everyone was asked one simple question: What makes a good advertising intern? Despite being so open-ended, the question yielded many common themes. Passion for the business, a positive attitude and an amazing work ethic were mentioned a number of times. Enthusiasm was also highlighted often, as was - hmm - proper hygiene. Each and every contributor was brutally honest and candid. Anyone who reads this revealing document owes them a huge debt of gratitude.

Informational Interview essay instruction PURPOSE: Informational interviewing is a process by which you can collect data about jobs, occupations, and organizations by interviewing people in their respective fields. It should not be construed as a job interview! It may result in a valuable job contact, but for the moment its purpose is to obtain information and career advice. Dr Negar is an Educational Consultant, who currently works in her own company which was founded in 2013, Global Student Placement Network (Global SPN), Is an international consultant Offering a wide range of academic and educational services to individuals, institutions, companies and organizations. Services include International Education Consulting; College Placements; Campus Tours; High School and English Language Program Placements; Employment and Career Coaching; Postdoctoral Support Services; Student Recruitment and Marketing. I chose Dr. Negar Davis as my mentor because of her great knowledge and expertise in public/student affairs. I met with Dr. Negar Davis on Saturday, October 29th to interview and discuss some questions and obtain information and career advice from her as I chose her to be my informational interview mentor.. I drove from Los Angeles to San Diego to meet with Dr. Negar as she invited me to her place at 8941 Gowdy Ave. The questions that I came up with and that Dr. Davis responded to were: · What knowledge, skills or experience are necessary to qualify for your position? First, you must have the passion for what you do and do the best at it. Initially, the knowledge comes from the theoretical aspects of learning the scope of the work and understanding the fundamental skill sets. Second, you apply those theories to practical real life situations and step-by-step one grows and develops in the profession. Theories learned and applied in the classroom become second nature to what needs to get done in the moment of time when decisions have to be quick, concise and most important right. Working in higher education doesn’t suit everyone as with any other profession. In higher education, one is surrounded by lifelong learning which can be a challenge for some but excitement for others. Hence, for those who thrive in higher education the skills keep growing and are never ending which add to the experience that keeps growing with time. Consequently, there is never a moment that you think you have seen it all and know it all. You simply don’t as every day brings a new surprise and a new situation that one has to once again think and act quickly to make it a win-win for everyone involved. · What are the skills and abilities that are needed to be effective in your job function? The most important skills are to be a good listener and observer to fully understand the needs of the students and able to work well with people from different cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Other skills would be interpersonal communication and flexibi.

The Falls Prevention Awareness Initiative of the Cobb County Public Library System addresses a costly community health challenge. Guidance provided by public health experts on evidence-based strategies for reducing fall injury risks in the senior population has been critical for shaping the initiative since its launch in 2015. The initiative is supported by partnerships with state, local and national organizations. Cobb libraries collaborate with public health and aging services agencies, healthcare providers, universities, and others providing Falls Prevention library programs. Cobb residents have attended health screenings, classes such as A Matter of Balance, CarFit senior driver safety inspections, and more.

Georgia State University’s consolidation with Georgia Perimeter College (GPC) offered many challenges and opportunities for preservation of GPC’s history. This Quick Take focuses on lessons learned and key take-aways when collecting archival materials & preserving historical records at the smaller institution, Georgia Perimeter College. Librarians wear a lot of hats. Far from a quiet profession with an easily defined range of tasks, a librarian might be called upon to unclog a toilet, clean up a spill, and provide technical support all in the same day (or hour!) How can a librarian stay on top of all of the needed tasks and maintain sanity? This program will consist of a short review of current research on librarian time management and a panel discussion of current librarians discussing ways they manage time, with time for questions and answers.

In Spring 2020, an assessment project was developed to assess the impact of library instruction to five Speech 102 classes. The assessment was administered in two parts using the immediate and follow-up surveys provided in the project OUTCOME platform. The immediate survey was administered via a print survey directly after the in-person instruction sessions. Due to the pandemic, the follow-up survey was administered six weeks after the instruction sessions via an online survey. This session will discuss using project OUTCOME, the findings of the assessment, and what librarians can learn from assessment projects during a semester of upheaval.

Presenters: Ashley Carroll, Angela Mehaffey. Presented at the virtual Georgia Libraries Conference in October 2020. During FY 2020, University of West Georgia’s Library was presented with actual and theoretical budget cut scenarios. As a result, we were asked to reduce our collections budget by approximately $400,000 for FY 2021 and to devise various strategies for potential budget reductions in the future. Our collection management committee accomplished this through a multifaceted approach: analyzing relevant data points, seeking insight from subject area liaisons and departmental faculty, and evaluating relevance to current degree programs and course rotations. Our framework provides an example of how to undertake a collection management project during times of fiscal uncertainty.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
