The document discusses several precedent studies of building projects that utilized different construction systems and materials. It includes details on a metal roofing system used at Towson University, a terra cotta facade and composite concrete floor system at Villa Isola Bella, a steel frame structure at the Aspen Art Museum, a terra cotta facade at UMKC Bloch Executive Hall, a double skin facade and louvers at the Surry Hills Library, and sketches of terra cotta facade panels and a double skin facade. Sectional perspectives further illustrate a proposed community library design utilizing several of these systems, including a composite concrete floor, double skin facade, and steel frame structure.
1. TOWSON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS
PRECEDENT STUDIES METAL ROOFING SYSTEM
Architect : GWWO, Inc.
Location : Towson, Maryland, United States
Roof : Double Lock Standing Seam Panels
Material : RHEINZINK prePATINA Blue Gray Zinc
Supplier ; MetalTech-USA
Towson’s roof is an aluminum double lock standing seam panel, designed to achieve even the
most complicated, visionary design. The roof has eco-friendly qualities and economic benefits
that made this material a mainstream in construction for decades.
ADVANTAGES
1. Lightweight
2. Durable
3. Non-corrosive
DISADVANTAGES
1. It is not the most affordable roofing option
2. Can be quite noisy in the event of heavy rain
4. Resilient - combines strength with flexibility
5. 100% recycable
6. Sustinable and environmentally friendly.
3.If they are not properly installed with fasteners that
allow the metal to expand and contract, the panels
may loosen
MATERIAL USED
Aluminium and Galvanized steel

Roof Sheet
Aluminium Clip
Insulation
Steel Bar

Purlin
REASON OF CHOICE
Metal roofing is 100% recycable and its proven to last aorund 50 years. It is easy to match to any building
or even home and give it a beautiful style. Maintaining aluminium roofs are also easy as it can be repainted
but will likely never need to be replaced. It has very low embodied energy.

PRECEDENT STUDIES TERRACOTTA FACADE CLADDING PANELS
Architect : BNIM
Location : Missouri, United States
BuildingType: University Building
Products : TERRART® Solid (Precast),TERRART® Light,TERRART® Baguette
Supplier : Hunter Douglas
This building’s facade is constructed by panels that has to be glued on the wall. The ceramic elements in
TERRART®-SOLID were produced individually for each project in the color and shape desired by the
client.

ADVANTAGES
1. Support Quick Installation
2. Precast construction
3. Low Cost
3. Nearly Zero Maintainence needed
4.Wide range of design options
DISADVANTAGES
1. Limitations of size and span capabilities
2. Substantial cost that ships from Europe
25MM
1524MM
REASON OF CHOICE
This system has a very wide range of profiles for surface design and it can suit everyones needs easily.
It can be even custom designed. These panels also provide major benefits in the thermal performance,
like the rainscreen and sunscreen components. The layout of the panels can be designed in a random,
but functional pattern to create an attractive facade design, while increasing the energy efficiency of
the building.
3. SURRY HILLS LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY CENTRE
PRECEDENT STUDIES DOUBLE SKIN FACADE SYSTEM
Architect : Francis-Jones MorehanThorp
Location : 405 Crown St, Surry Hills
Builder : WBHO Pro Build
The glass prisms creates an open, transparent facade, skin to an open doll house, and addresses the new
open space so that all the different activities of the centre are visible and displayed. The timber ‘U’ form
embraces the prismatic environmental atrium and orient both towards the south and the new litlle park.
This ‘solid’ sections of this timber form
are made of automated louver
systems that filter and control sunlight
and view.
Operable Louvers
MATERIALS
LowVOC Finishes
Low Formaldehyde Furniture
ADVANTAGES
1.A high performance solution for sun control
2. Low maintenance
3. Special shaped design / full system possible
3. Easy to install
4. Effective form of reducing heat gain
5. Easily Operated
DISADVANTAGES
1. Expensive to install
2. SIgnificant security risk if installed without extra
measures

REASON OF CHOICE
Excellent solution for sun control, perfectly suited for
uses on almost any building especially in tropical
countries like in Malaysia.
8. PRECEDENT STUDIES METAL COMPOSITE CONCRETE STRUCTURE FLOOR SYSTEM
V I L L A I S O L A B E L L A _ M O S A T E R R A C E S
Architect : Tenback de Groof Architecture
Location : Nuenen, Netherlands
Manufacturer : Mosa
Designer : Mosa DesignTeam
Manutacturer for the floor systems : Hambro Structural Products
This beautiful house has the exterior flooring by Mosa XT, it can create an optically seamless transition
from interior to exterior. Mosa XT tiles can be incorporated into all conventional floor systems. The
Hambro floor system combines composite joists wih poured concrete developing a hybrid concrete /
steelT-beam running in one direction and an integrated, continuous slab in the opposite direction.
FLOOR SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
Welded Wire mesh covered over top
chord to form catenary
Concrete poured in place
Cold rolled top chord “S” portion embedded
in slab for composite action
Composite Steel Deck
Slab over wall or
beam forms an
acoustical seal
Joist with
bearing shoe
ADVANTAGES
1. Good Fire Resistance
2. Good Acoustical
3. Cost Savings
3. Ease of Installation
4. Lightweight concrete is used resulting in reduced
dead weight
DISADVANTAGES
1. Easily brittle
2. Uncertainty of final strength
3. Larger Column Section
3. Shrinkage
REASON OF CHOICE
Composite floor system is considered by many to be the highest quality type of construction. The con-
crete together with the steel acts to create a stiffer, lighter and less expensive structure. This makes it so
much easier to be choosen.
9. PRECEDENT STUDIES STEEL FRAME STRUCTURES SYSTEM
A S P E N A R T M U S E U M
Architect : Shigeru Ban Architects
Location : Aspen, USA
Manufacturer : Southwest Steel Construction LTD
Although the facade and roof of this building is mostly made from wood, the structural system is fully
steel frame construction. Most steel construction is done with a type of steel called mild steel. Mild steel
is a material that is immensely strong.
ADVANTAGES
1. Super-Quick to build at site
2. Flexible - Good at resisting dynamic forces such as
wind or earthquake forces.
3.Wide range of ready-made structural sections
3. Can be made to take any kind of shape
4.Wide range of joining methods
DISADVANTAGES
1.They lose strength at high temperature
2. Susceptible to fire
3. They are prone to corrosion in humid or
marine environments

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
REASON OF CHOICE
Steel frame structure is of great advantage to buildings. Has alot of important feature, it can bend without
cracking, it can be used to make different types of design and it would not break easily. However, steel
quickly loses its strength in a fire. Therefore, steel in buildings must be protected from fire or very high tem-
perature. It can be done by wrapping it with boards or spray-on material called fire protection.

15. This report is an assignment that is aligned with the Studio Design Project, it is about analyising precedent studies and
establishment of the structural systems of our design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction
systems. The systems are such as roof system, wall system, flooring system and structural system. These construction sys-
tems are used to assist for the design proposal of Community Library that is located in Jalan Haji Salleh, Sentul, Kuala
Lumpur. The application of materials, construction technique and structural design are essential elements in designing
a successful Community Library for the community of Sentul.
So the new community library should be an interesting and a welcoming place for the community of Sentul.
