PROJECT MANAGEMENT APPROACHES
• Predictive Project Management: When
the scope of work and requirements for the
project are clear and justify the detailed upfront
planning.
• Adaptive Project Management: When the scope
of work and requirements for the project
are difficult to define, therefore creating a rapidly
changing environment.
• Hybrid Project Management: Blend of Adaptive
approach and Predictive Approach.
The PMI study “Achieving Greater Agility” found that
the companies exhibiting a high degree of agility, 68%
used agile methods, 71% predictive, and 72% used a
hybrid methodology. Image Source: https://onlinepmcourses.com/hybrid-project-management/#whatis

PREDICTIVE AND ADAPTIVE MINDSETS
• Predictive Mindset
▪ Works on a fixed set of requirements
▪ Controlling behaviour & result focused
▪ Task-oriented or Output driven
• Adaptive Mindset
▪ Responds well to changes
▪ Participative behaviour and learning focused
▪ Value-oriented or Outcome driven

NEED OF HYBRID PROJECT
MANAGEMENT-PRACTICALITY
&APPLICABILITY• You want the flexibility of Agile and you need the reliability of Waterfall. Hybrid project management
can give you the best of both.
• Agile alone becomes challenging for long duration projects and it additionally requires the structure to
achieve the long-term goals.
• Challenge with Waterfall approach is adapting to frequent changes, especially in software industries. It
doesn’t produce the working software until the end of the project.
• In this case we can use this hybrid approach to get rid of the weakness of existing frameworks.
• Blending Agile and Waterfall makes it easier to adapt throughout your project. Your team works more
efficiently.

HYBRID PROJECT MANAGEMENT-
PRACTICALITY & APPLICABILITY
Industry wise applicability of hybrid approach- How we can implement ?--
• Construction – Hybrid project management is suitable.
• IT Software - Agile works best when there is alignment and
support from all stakeholders.
• Health care & others – Hybrid could be a better approach for
implementing changes during clinical trials/post marketing
pharmacovigilance projects.

BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF HYBRID
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Benefits:-
Combining both traditional and agile techniques resolve many situations in projects and can achieve
success.
Implementing hybrid methodology we can adopt the mix of waterfall and agile and techniques of both.
By adopting hybrid approach we can use traditional waterfall as a structure for project and agile for
project/product delivery.
Challenges:-
The mindset for implementing.
Conflicts in the organization levels.
Disturbance in organization levels due to opposing frameworks concepts.
It takes time to learn new methodology/approach

Anti-Patterns
• An “aggregated’ team velocity metric and using it to predict and
drive progress.
• Telling the team to work overtime to improve performance.
• Failure to actively manage risk exposure at the small team level.
• Failure to actively manage stakeholder involvement and their
representation competency.
• Using “proxy releases” rather than formally selling-off products
incrementally.
• Essentially traditional development with a few “agile practices”
sprinkled in to make it appear “agile”
• Using the requirements volatility measure inappropriately to
control scope creep.

HYBRID PROJECT MANAGEMENT
STRUCTURES & TYPES
• Incubator
• Container Solution
▪ Classic-Agile
▪ Agile-Agile
• Partial Assimilation
▪ Classic-Agile (Project leader decides to hold reviews and retrospectives)
• Synthesis
▪ Agile-Agile (Scrumban)
• Parallel Worlds
▪ Classis-Agile (Modules are developed independently from each other)
• The Interlocked Solution
▪ Classic-Agile (Dependency on other sub-projects/work packages)
• Coupled Systems
▪ Agile-Lean-Agile (Design Thinking, MVP and Scrum)

BEST PRACTICES
• Incorporating the best practices from predictive and adaptive approaches
• Aligning strategic goals with initiatives
• Understanding project and team size before adopting any approach
• Gain organizational support
• Collaborate and communicate closely with Development team
• Plan and Prioritize
• Degree of Adaptability and Flexibility impacts the outcomes
• No one-size-fits-all approach
