this presentation is about the green building concept. I have thrown some light on green building concept, its cost facts, why we need green buildings?, scope of green buildings and I have also described about my visit to a green building, about LEED, rating system of LEED, and some features of green buildings.

3. What is a Green Building?
•A sustainable or green building
produces net zero or smaller carbon
footprint or reduces the other harmful
emissions.
•It is a building which does not have
adverse effects on the ecological
balance.
•These structures don’t have a negative
impact on the environment as they
generate their own energy from solar
energy, wind energy etc.
5. • The Earth has limited amount of energy sources like coal,
petroleum, natural gases etc. so their use must be minimized. If
these non renewable sources of energy are used excessively then
our earth’s resources will get exhausted.
• The construction of buildings all over the world use 40% of earth’s
materials and produces upto 20-30% solid waste which needs to be
dumped.
• The carbon emitted from buildings is about 21% of the total carbon
emission of the world.
• Therefore, green buildings are needed to reduce the carbon
footprint and for preserving the non renewable sources of energy.
8. Visit to a green building.
Last year I visited a green building in Bhopal (MP) itself for doing further
research on green buildings. It is constructed by an Indo-German company,
Omega-Renk. It is the only LEED certified, platinum rated building in MP.
9. Some features of that building -
•It produces its own energy derived from
solar and wind power.
•The waste material is also treated before
dumping or is reused.
•Use of LED lights, furniture made from
recyclable materials, water harvesting,
motion sensing technology,
Pic – solar panels installed in the building to
produce its own electrical energy derived from
solar energy.
10. • materials used for construction are also
eco friendly like flyash bricks or flyash
concrete.
Paint used on the outer walls and roof had
reflecting properties.
It helped in increasing the underwater level.
Pic – the monitor fixed at the wall showed
details about the functioning of solar panels.
11. Pic – this is the workshop of that
building which had thermal
insulated roof and glass walls so
that natural light can be used
inside.
Pic – the lead platinum
certificate awarded to that
building.
12. Pic – partition walls are also made from
glass for maximum utilization of the natural
light, LED lights also used with motion
sensing technology.
Pic – digital board installed
which gave info about the
amount of electricity produced,
irradiation etc
13. COST FACTS -
•Cost of construction of a green building
may be 5-30% more according to the
rating.
•Energy cost go down by 30 – 40% as in
30 – 35 years of life cycle. But in normal
building the energy cost exceed
construction cost.
•10% overall cost saving potential over
10 years.

14. What is LEED?
•LEED, or Leadership in Energy &
Environmental Design, is a green
building certification program that
recognizes best-in-class building
strategies and practices.
•To receive LEED certification, building
projects satisfy prerequisites and earn
points to achieve different levels of
certification. Prerequisites and credits
differ for each rating system, and teams
choose the best fit for their project.
•Established in 1993, in Washington DC.
