Design Thinking
Framework
A process that endeavors to solve
problems and create new possibilities,
generally by relying on deep
observational research combined with
creative experimentation and
extensive prototyping—all aimed at
the goal of producing better or more
useful objects, experiences, and
systems.

Big Questions
Integrative Thinking Requires Integrative Curriculum
won’t talk at all about me or my experience, but will be glad to during the discussion.
asked to speak about it. won’t exactly do it.
start with the answer. at least to the question of what MOST business schools are concerned about.
miami - cross the board cuts
instead, i am going to talk about 11 challenges that a top ranked wpi business school will need to consider.
business education needs to be thinking horizontally, not vertically.
social entrepreneurship. health care. social media. sustainability.
getting the message out. reinforcing it. repeating it. developing a reputation.
business school students want to work for companies, study with, learn about socially responsible commerce.
no longer classic philanthropy - for both economic reasons, but also a shifting demographic.
COMPETITION
not just US schools, but international also.
Walking the walk.
Baby boomer retirements. New hires. Competitive landscape.
Baby boomer retirements. New hires. Competitive landscape.
Can’t rest on laurels
Can’t assume that everyone knows how good the program is
Regional, National, International.
Active recruitment. Social Media. High School Programs.
Strategic partnerships, not just internships.
Clear paths for employment.
Research.
IP
THE most important challenge facing business schools today.
When I went to get my head around the WPI brand, I began with the mission statement.
How is WPI’s new School of Business positioned, relative to these challenges - relative to this mission - relative to the market?
Exceptionally well. It is what excites me most about this position. The pieces are all there.
Much like there was at time when technology “stood alone” in industry, so is business.
...it’s just that a story needs to be told.
One framework for telling that story might be “Design Thinking”
The challenges that face WPI largely boil down to one of storytelling. The raw materials for the story are all here. What story will it tell? What story should it tell? One thing is for sure: it is going to be a great story.
