The Battle of Barnet
To mark the current archaeological survey
being carried out of the battlefield site, the
focus of this Hadley Wood News and a
subsequent special issue in September is
on the Wars of the Roses and in particular
the Battle of Barnet. Anyone interested in
the battle needs some understanding of
this tumultuous period of English history
and the series of bloody battles fought in
the fifteenth century between the Houses
of Lancaster traditionally fighting under the
red rose and York under the white rose.
Battles which brought together in mortal
combat three kings, Edward IV, Henry VI,
and the future Richard III.
With regard to the location of the
battlefield we know from these accounts
that the battle took place in fields half a
mile to, say, one mile north of Barnet. We
read about how the opposing armies were
camped on either side of the St Alban’s
road and how hedgerows and a marshy
hollow featured in the battle. But the exact
location has for long been a matter of
dispute between military historians. For
this reason and to raise pubic awareness
of one of the most important battles in

the wars of the Roses, the site is being
investigated by a team of experts.
But first one myth should be dispelled.
The opposing sides did not fight under the
badges of red and white roses, despite
the famous but wholly fictional scene
in Shakespeare’s Henry VI where rival
leaders pick red and white roses for their
followers. In fact the noblemen had their
own individual personal badges the white
rose being only one of many badges used
by the Yorkists. The confusion between the
multifarious badges had a key role in the
outcome of the battle of Barnet.
The Wars of the Roses are generally
considered to have started in 1455 with the
first battle of St Albans. There were really
four wars – the first from 1455 to 1460 with
attempts to control the government of the
royal household; the second from 1460
to about 1464 with the Yorkist Edward IV
securing the throne; the third battle was in
1471 at Barnet.
ThecauseofthisthirdbattlewasEdward’s
chief backer the Earl of Warwick who could
not accept the erosion of his early influence
on Edward. Two events in particular caused
a final breakdown between the two men.
First Edward fell in love with and married
a pretty young widow, Elizabeth Woodville,
when Warwick was planning a political
marriage with a French princess. Secondly
Edward was going his own way in foreign
policy. Warwick favoured an alliance with
the French king but Edward was moving
towards a connection with the Duke of
Burgundy.
From late 1468 Warwick planned a coup
d’état. He formed two unlikely alliances;
first he persuaded Clarence the elder of
Edward’s two brothers to join him and
secondly he went to France and after
begging forgiveness from his erstwhile
deadly enemy Margaret of Anjou agreed a
plan with her to drive out Edward IV and
restore Henry VI to the throne.
In September 1470 Warwick returned to
England with a landing in Devon. Edward
by then in Doncaster panicked and took
himself off into self-imposed exile in the
Low Countries. Henry VI was released from
the Tower and in yet another turn of events
in this extraordinary story of musical chairs
restored to the throne. But before long
Edward was to return from exile and face

A Wildflower meadow in
Hadley Wood
In 2014 the Hadley Wood Association and
Hadley Wood Primary School combined
forces to turn a rather dull field behind
the Association building into a wildflower
meadow. After soil analysis ploughing and
tilling ,the schoolchildren (then in year 4)
seeded the area with a mix of wildflowers
provided by a commercial seed firm. In
2015 nothing much happened but this
spring the field has been a riot of colour
attracting many bees and butterflies.
Now in their sixth and final year, the
schoolchildren have made a footpath
around the field for anyone interested. The
main enemies of wildflowers are grass and
fertilisers. For this reason the field has to
be scythed (any offers of help ?) to inhibit
grass growth and seeding.
There should then be an aftermath of
more flower growth. Many thanks to the
children and their teachers as well as
farmer Giles Judd, Kamil and John from
the HWA grounds team.

Big changes at the Hadley
Wood (Friday) Bridge Club
With a move to embrace new technology
(at least fairly new to us) the club now
uses computer dealt hands. The
advantages are easily appreciated as the
deals are really random and are evenly
distributed in both directions. But most of
all at the end of each session the players
are given a printed record of every hand
they have played. On this record all the
possible scores are listed along with what
would be the optimum score.
This is really useful particularly
in developing a good partnership
understanding and raises the standard of
play. Take a look at our web-site hwabridge.
co.uk .Read all about us and then look at
the results for May when we started using
the new system.
The Friday club is affiliated to the English
Bridge Union and has been a member
since its inception in the late 60’s under
the legendary Tom Berry. In 2000 the EBU
became computerized and so all members
can look back at every session of bridge
they have played and are given a status as
to how many winning points (Master Points)
they have accumulated over their career.
Every time they play they are rated under
the National Grading system. So if you
want to take it seriously then you can see
your progress or if you are like most of our
members who play simply for the enjoyment
of the great game, it is a pleasure if after a
good session to take a look and see your
grade improve.
We are pleased to welcome visitors who
would enjoy a fairly serious game on a
Friday evening at the HWA Centre. Every
effort is made to keep the
sessions friendly following the
EBU Standard of best practice
at the tables. So please come
and meet us and enjoy a game,
see the website for details.
You do not have to be a
member to play but if you later
decide to become a member of
our club you will automatically
be a member of the EBU.
(unless for any reason you do
not want to).

ready for discussion with GTR management
in the next RUG meeting on Thursday 18
August at 7pm at St Paul’s Church Hall.
Do come along and contribute to the best
possible design. In the meantime, there
are four main themes to report.
Thanks to our Station Manager, the
station has been redecorated
and a picture of the Flying
Scotsman at Hadley Wood
hung in the ticket office.
A new flower trough now
brightens up the forecourt,
beautifully planted by Sarah
of The Little Flower House,
and the RUG noticeboard
has been moved to the ticket
office window.
There is the possibility of
retail opportunities at the
station entrance. See Kate

The RUG has given
unanimous support for a
colourful vitreous enamel
plaque to commemorate
Sir Nigel Gresley and his
iconic locomotives here at
the station entrance. Local
funding will be matched by The Gresley
Society, with whom we co-designed it. If

HWS Summer Fete
On Sunday 12th of June, Hadley Wood
School hosted an amazing Summer Fete.
There were a variety of different activities
and attractions. These included: a 4x4
Bentley; Shetland pony rides, and an
incredible BBQ selling a variety of different
foods for all attendees to eat. Despite
the rain, the ponies were still happy to
trot along and raised a ton of money for
the school. Tom Cook (Luca in Year 6’s
Dad) raised £175 by completing the ALS
(Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Ice Bucket
Challenge. Some Year 6 Students set up
a “Knock Down the Cans” stall which was
very successful and raised £30 for the
school. Alongside the Cans Stall, the Sweet
Tombola was a brilliant accomplishment
and it sold out within the first hour. The
Raffle was popular and gathered many
people to hear the announcements for
the prizes. The most wanted prize was the
Ray Ban Sunglasses
and the Donut Making
Machine. Guy Cecil
(William in Year 6’s
Dad) was the brilliant
DJ for the music at
the fete. “Walking
on Sunshine” was a
hit and an enjoyable
crowd pleaser as well
as performances from
the choir and Lemon
Jelly. The Pimms Stall
was run by Melina
Marneros, Toni Toro
and Juliet Bairfelt and
Our local celebrations to mark
the Queens 90th Birthday
St Paul’s church hosted a double event
on Sunday June 12th to mark the Queen’s
90th birthday.
First, in the bunting surrounded church
gardens, we enjoyed the Dog Show at
which many participants of all shapes,
colours, ages and sizes turned up - bringing
their owners with them. Despite the fact that
all corgis were able to have a free entry the
only corgis to turn up were 2 helium filled
corgi balloons who pottered around on
their cardboard legs during the afternoon.
We are most grateful to Wood Street vets
at Cockfosters for coming and judging for
us so that many rosettes were handed out
and worn proudly during the afternoon.
Categories included to waggiest tail, most
appealing eyes, best puppy, looks most
like owner, best trick, and Jeffery was the
overall Hadley Wood Hound of 2016.
Elsewhere in the garden the children
were playing several old fashioned games
such as Splat the Rat, Shove Halfpenny,
Coconut Shy etc and they could also
decorate biscuits in a royal fashion.
This was followed by a delicious home
there were also plenty of other art and
craft, jewellery and fashion stalls run by
the parents. A special thanks to the Year
6 children who helped out by handing out
various drinks and Ice Lollies (all for money
of course!). Overall, the HWS Summer
Fete was very enjoyable and successful,
even without the bouncy castles due to the
weather! We hope that lots of money was
raised for our next school project.
Luca, William and Kristian, Year 6 Hadley
Wood Primary School
made tea attended by over 100 people
in the Church Hall which had also been
decorated very patriotically and where
large numbers of sandwiches, scones,
cakes, jelly and ice cream disappeared
rapidly. Tea was accompanied by a small
jazz trio and after the Minister Rupert
Mackay had spoken briefly about the
Queen’s clear Christian faith the whole hall
stood to sing God Save the Queen.
Hadley Wood had definitely marked Her
Majesty’s birthday “right royally!”

In 1926 Alan Cobham De Havilland test
pilot and winner of the 1924 King’s Cup
flew a small biplane to Australia and back.
Arthur Ward, an RAF Flight engineer in
Basra, was offered a place on the plane
when Cobham’s original partner, Elliot,
died after being shot. It says something for
Ward’s character and ability that without
any previous experience of the plane’s
radial engine he agreed to accompany
Cobham on this dangerous journey.
The plane was a De Havilland
50J Biplane with a single Armstrong
Siddeley 385 HP Jaguar radial engine..
Cruising at about 100mph and carrying
approximately 680 litres of petrol gave
this plane a maximum operating distance
of about 10 hours flight. Without radio and
only the ‘finest aeroplane compass in the
world at that time, the Hughes Aperiodic’
to guide them they flew from the Medway
river at Rochester UK via Marseilles,
Naples, Athens, Bagdhad, the Persian
gulf, Karachi, Delhi, Calcutta, Burma,
Penang, Singapore, Sumatra, Java Bali
and finally 500 miles from Timor to Darwin
over open sea. Eventually after crossing
Australia the aviators reached Melbourne
to be greeted by huge crowds.
From Melbourne they flew home to
a massive public welcome landing
their seaplane on the Thames nearby
Westminster bridge.
Kenneth Ward a Hadley Wood resident
and the nephew of Arthur Ward the
Flight Engineer, is the author. This is an
engrossing and enjoyable book about
the route, best enjoyed with a copy of
a world atlas to hand. It describes the
setbacks and the near disasters which
these men overcame whilst flying in an
open cockpit in all weathers during a
20000 mile journey.

Retail Opportunity at Hadley
Wood Station
There is a palpable sense that the residents
of Hadley Wood are seeking to improve
the local community as evidenced by the
sterling efforts of both the Hadley Wood
Neighbourhood Planning Forum (NPF)
and the Rail User Group (RUG). The latter
are working in tandem with the local train
company GTR to reinvent the station with step
free access, a planting scheme, cycle racks,
a lick of paint and the list goes on!
At the last RUG meeting, there was a
discussionaboutthepossibilityofestablishing
some kind of retail space, adjacent to the
ticket office within the station forecourt. The
consensus was that the existing parade of
retailers, eateries and services in Crescent
West are a vital and highly-valued part of the
Hadley Wood community; there was also
a strong feeling that Hadley Wood could
benefit from an additional retail space with a
complementary yet distinct offering.
Hadley Wood is in a semi-rural location,
surrounded by farms on all sides; a business
selling locally sourced produce such as
vegetables and honey would be an obvious
option. Busy commuters would delight in
grabbing fresh, local produce after their
commute home in the evening. And there
may be other ideas too, perhaps including
seasonal offerings, or an upmarket, stylish
outlet. Those of us who have lived in Hadley
Wood long enough to recall (and hanker
after!) Amaz can confirm that this kind of store
can do very well here.
GTR are open to discussing any
business cases from the local community
and mentioned that two distinct pop-up
businesses already operate out of St Albans
station: one in the morning and the other in
the afternoon.
If anyone is interested in exploring the idea
of setting up a retail business at the station
to complement our existing shops, please
feel free to contact me in the first instance at
katejacobrosa@hotmail.com.
