A set of flow charts illustrating the relationship between participants, processes and a hypothetical EMR system for a small to medium medical practice to facilitate discussion among Doctors, Administrators, Developers and other interested parties
6. The Background for this Presentation: It can be difficult to talk about a proposed computer system with potential users, managers and executives who understand their business but have little or no systems expertise. A picture can be worth a thousand words. A flow chart is a good form for this picture because it shows who does what and in what sequence to produce the planned results. I recently developed just such a set of flow charts in the early stages of the planning for an electronic medical system for small medical practices. If you have ever been to a doctor, you can follow the flow of who and what. The set of charts also notes the benefits of a new computer system as contrast to the current paper based processes. It has provided a useful place to begin the detailed discussion needed to define the benefits for a specific practice and initiate requirements analysis. It also provides a good generalized model useful for almost any computer system that has significant human interfaces. It answers the high level questions of who and what and when and, perhaps the most important question: What’s in it form me? It provides a solid base for the level of detail required for the successful design, development and testing of a new system.
