Getting over a hangover naturally
1. Getting Over a Hangover Naturally
Last night was a blast: friends were laughing, the music was thumping, the booze was flowing…
now, hours later, your head is throbbing, the room is spinning, your heart is racing and your
stomach is in knots!
Although alcohol is not a regular part of a healthy lifestyle, many of us will imbibe from time to
time. As I have grown older, I have noticed that I do not like the way I feel the next morning,
even after having only a couple of drinks. Being a home brewer, I do enjoy a good microbrew-
plenty of hops, preferably dark, and many times, a higher alcohol content. By cutting back on
drinking, I lowered my tolerance to alcohol. A beer, even with food, can cause me to experience
interrupted sleep, and a fuzzy head and a bloated feeling the next morning. Whether you are
experiencing discomfort or out and out head splitting nausea and disorientation of a full blown
hangover, there are some natural ways to calm the effects of alcohol overindulgence.
Veisalgia, the medical term for a hangover, can cause a myriad of symptoms of varying degrees.
Alcohol effects the body negatively in two main ways, as a diurtic and as a toxin. Alcohol contains
ethanol which causes the body to dehydrate. The lack of fluids in the body causes the brain to
shrink a little and to pull away from the skull which causes the pounding headache. As a toxin the
alcohol is harsh on the stomach lining which causes an upset stomach. Liver enzymes try to
break the ethanol down and the by products formed prevents the supply of glucose, the primary
source of energy for all living cells, and leads to fatigue. Overindulgence can disrupt sleep and
other body rhythms, and can effect your mood and concentration.
The severity of one’s symptoms can depend on how quickly you drink and how much, quality of
health, how rested you are, what you ate beforehand, body mass, genes, tolerance level and
your sex. Women metabolize alcohol differently from men since they have less water in their
bodies to dilute the alcohol. On average, women get drunk faster than men. The surest hangover
cure is of course, not to get drunk, or know your limit. Sometimes even our limits may change,
so here are some things to consider when you may accidentally overdo it...
• Stay Hydrated! Many people agree that drinking a large glass of water before bed and when
you wake up in the morning, can help lessen the effects of a hangover. This will both hydrate
the body and help dilute the toxins. Some people also drink an 8-oz glass of water between
drinks. Sports drinks that provide potassium and electrolytes, are also beneficial, but stay
away from energy drinks that contain caffeine, as that will dehydrate you even more. A
milkshake made with banana and honey is great because it replenishes the electrolytes and
potassium that the alcohol depleted. The banana and milk calms the stomach, bananas also
contain magnesium, which relaxes the blood vessels, helping to eliminate the pounding
headache, honey builds up depleted blood sugar levels.
• Eat Right! There are many hangover remedies involving food. Many suggest heavy starches
or greasy foods which supposedly absorb the alcohol, but there is no evidence to back this
theory up. Since you already received empty calories from the sugars and possible
carbohydrates in the alcohol consumed the night before, you may not want to continue on
this unhealthy diet. Excess grease can upset an already disrupted digestive system. An
article in The Journal of Food Science states that it was determined that the amino acids and
enzymes in asparagus can protect the liver against toxins. The liver is an important organ, it
processes nutrients, produces bile to aid digestion and cleanses toxins from the blood, and
produces agents that aid in clotting the blood. Excessive alcohol hardens the liver and makes
it more difficult for it to be able to regenerate and heal itself. Eggs are also a good hangover
food in that they are loaded with cysteine, which helps break down toxins from excessive
drinking.
2. • Vitamins and Supplements - Taking a B-vitamin supplement before going to bed or
immediately after you wake up, aids in the metabolization of the alcohol and dilates the blood
vessels which helps to restore energy levels. B-5 pantothenic acid aids the body in alcohol
detoxification and B-12 reduces water retention and decreases the duration of the hangover.
Vitamin C increases the breakdown of alcohol in the body. Drink fruit juices or citrus fruits
when you wake up after a night of drinking.
• Detox/Cleansing supplements: To treat a hangover the natural way, cleanse and detox the
body . A nice hot shower or warm bath can help you begin to feel human again. We often
forget that the skin, our largest organ, can also be damaged by alcohol abuse. It is a good
time for a home-spa treatment. Choose products that provide gentle ex-foliation, like dead
sea salts or papaya or kiwi extracts, along with soothing oils like borage, olive, or eucalyptus.
These will help to rid the impurities from the skin, and soothe it, while the aromas can often
help clear that fuzzy head. Cleansing your digestive tract of toxins is also a gentle, but
effective was to purge your body of impurities. You can also try an herbal detox product that
contains fennel seed which flushes out the system and rejuvenates the liver. Barberry root is
another key ingredient that will assist in detoxification and stimulates intestinal movement.
Rhubarb root cleanses the intestines, bowels and liver and blood of accumulated toxins.
Herbs like ginger, will help soothe and ease the stomach. A detox supplement containing
these ingredients will rid your body of toxins, calm the stomach and provide a normal balance
of bacteria in the intestines.
• Exercise – While reading an interview with a martial arts master, he stated that after a few
drinks he would go for a walk and that sleeping right after drinking is not good for the health.
Going straight to sleep after drinking may slow the breakdown of alcohol, causing it to stay in
your system longer. It is important though to get a good eight hours of sleep, so hopefully
you have the day off so that you can sleep in in the morning.
Once you are awake, hydrated, eaten your asparagus omelette with banana/honey milkshake,
taken your vitamins and cleansed your body inside and out, it is a good idea to exercise! It will
help rid the body of toxins, and the increased cirulation gets the blood and oxygen to your oxygen
starved brain. Whatever exercise regimen you are used to is fine, just do not expect to match
your pre-binge goals. If you do not regularly get much exercise, a brisk walk will be beneficial.
Always remember to continue drinking water throughout the day.
There are some hangover remedies that you may want to avoid. If possible, avoid caffeine. This
can end up dehydrating you even more, causing a worse headache, and delaying the ability to
flush and cleanse your system. Try a B- complex, plenty of water and exercise to get rid of the
groggy feeling.
Avoid aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and other pain relievers as the alcohol still in your
system and the pills can be hard on the kidneys and even can cause damage. They are also
usually not kind to an already distressed stomach lining. Many people suggest, a little hair of the
dog, or having an alcoholics drink to soothe the symptoms. It is believed by some that a
hangover is a sign of alcohol withdrawal, so more alcohol will soothe the symptoms. Symptoms of
alcohol withdrawal differ from a hangover, so this is not very likely the case. The ethanol in
alcohol is metabolized by the body and causes hangover symptoms, by adding more ethanol, your
enzymes focuses on the new ethanol, and you may experience a reprieve from your hangover.
This is only temporary, and then you have more toxins and a worse hangover to deal with.
Obviously, the best way to prevent a hangover is not to drink – but we’re all human, so when you
do, hopefully you’ll remember some of these natural remedies; the party may be over but the day
after can still be saved!
