web authoring protocols, design conventions and software
In this report I will be discussing the protocols, design conventions and software of web
authoring.
Web authoring
web authoring is a category of software that allows the user to develop a website in a desktop
publshing format. the softwatre will generate the required HTML coding for the lay out of the
web pages based on what the user designs.
Protocols
Is another word for rules, when discussing web authoring protocols we are talking about the
rules which govern the exchange of data and information over the internet.
Url
is the web address of the website. Most websites display the URL of a web page above the page
in an address bar, for example www.google.com/index
Domain name
Is the name given to a website, for example the domain name of www.google.com is "google".
This is registered throught a domain nanme registrar.
Domain name registrar
This is how users buy a domain name; these are sold and managed by domain name registers. A
domain name is unique name that identifies an internet source such as a website, for example
facebook for www.facebook.com
ISP'S
This is the company that provides you with the acces to the internet, for example; BT, Virging,
PlusNet, Talk-Talk
web page naming conventions
websites are made of lots of pages, all using the same URL. It is important that each website has
a suitable name that reflects the content of that page. (/index.htm, /contact.htm, /about.htm).
Design conventions
2. There are so many design conventions. Design conventions of a website are the colours,
shapres, the layout, font style used.
Rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is one of the most important design principles. It is a rule that is applied to the
layout and composition of images and websites. Websites and images can be divided into thirds;
three vertical lines and three horizontal lines. Where the lines cross are the points of focus. The
eye is naturally drawn to those positions; a website that uses the rule of thirds is universally
seen as visually appealing and keeps the design of the page neat. The rule of thirds has four
focus points that the eye is attracted to, the girl in the picture is on two of the points and takes
up a third of the picture.
Colour schemes
There are three main colour schemes that a website can be designed with. Picking the right
colour schemes for your website is very important in setting the tone and feel of the website.
Colour schemes nearly always reflect the nature of the website.
Monochromatic
(one-colour)-This means that is a website is monochromatic it uses only one colour, but it can
use all the tints, tones and shades of that colour, a website that uses monochromatic colour
scheme is; www.hag.ch/de/
3. Analogous
Analogous colour scheme is one which uses similar colours. Analogous colours are located next
to each other on the colour wheel. A website that uses analogous colour scheme is bigtop.it
Complimentary
complimentary colours are ones which are opposite, but visually work very well together. They
are always found opposite each ither on the colour wheel. A website that uses complimentary
colour shceme is www.naturestable.com
Serif and Sans Serif
When designing text to be used on a website, one important design decision is the use of the
font. There are two kinds of fonts: serif and sans serif. serif fonts have the flicks at the end of the
letters.
4. sans serif fonts do not have this flick. In print, publishing and website design sans serif fonts are
used because they are clearer to see.
Software
A computer software directs instructions to a computer processor ro perform operations.
A text editor is a type of program used for editing plain text files.
Pros
β’ simple edits are quite fast
β’ text editors teach you how to read HTML
β’ include comments and other notes to allow more efficient editing by other members of
the group.
Cons
β’ Difficult for a biginner to use
β’ harder to visualize how the page will look only from the HTML
Visual editors are editting programs which display the text being edited on the screen as it is
being edited.
Pros
β’ The software is easy to learn which makes it easier or the user to adapt and design a site
quickly.
β’ Good at handling complex tasks that used to always require hand coding to work
properly.
Cons
5. β’ You may have difficulty when loading a page due to editing dificulties.
β’ Some editors build pages using illegal HTML commands or tag placements.
