Why Networked FICON Storage Is Better Than Direct Attached Storage
With the many enhancements and improvements in mainframe I/O technology in
the past 5 years, the question "Do I need FICON switching technology, or should I
go with direct attached storage?" is frequently asked. This webcast explores both
technical and business reasons for implementing a switched FICON architecture
instead of a direct attached storage FICON architecture for mainframe attached
storage. The discussion will also include an overview of the Hitachi Data Systems
and Brocade solutions for mainframe environments.
By attending this webcast, you’ll learn
• The business and technical value of networking FICON attached storage
instead of direct attached
• The business and technical value of Hitachi mainframe storage capabilities
• The offerings from Hitachi Data Systems and Brocade that can help you
achieve the benefits of networked FICON storage

PROTOCOL INTERMIX MODE (PIM)
 Optional on the DCX family, Virtual
Fabrics (logical switches) create isolated,
independently managed domains within
the same chassis frame.
 Virtual Fabrics (VF) create the strongest
form of port isolation enabling easy
upgrade migrations and very safe protocol
intermixed mode (PIM) environments.
 Our VF, combined with VSP offers a
unique opportunity to consolidate the
physical I/O infrastructure while safely
maintaining logically separate I/O traffic
environments.

Value Proposition
 Mainframe shops that direct attach FICON storage cannot utilize all current z/OS capabilities
 DCX fully supports FICON attachment to one or more Storage Arrays via mainframe CHPIDs.
 Switched FICON supports SCALING OUT through our ability to add additional storage ports
and/or arrays without the need to add additional CHPIDs.
 Switched-FICON supports SCALING UP through our ability to achieve better utilization of the
storage channels as well as higher levels of connectivity through the sharing of connections.
 CUP (Control Unit Port) on the DCX Family provides an interface to
z/OS for performance reporting and management.

Mainframe / OPEN in Same Director Infrastructure
 Provides improved business agility
‒ Quickly deploy new applications
‒ Quickly re-deploy storage assets between Mainframe and
OPEN systems
‒ Storage virtualization permits non-disruptive movement of
data within the virtualized storage network
‒ Data movement between Mainframe and OPEN systems
can be enhanced through shared networks and
virtualization
 Improves overall storage performance
‒ Mix 8Gbps FICON and 16Gbps Fibre Channel
‒ 16Gbps for virtualization and ISL’s.

Mainframe / OPEN in Same Director Infrastructure
 Virtualization of data center storage will make use of
16Gbps technology on the OPEN side until FICON
devices have the same capability.
 Improved utilization of Director technology.
‒ Fewer ISL’s with 16Gbps
‒ Higher Fan-in / Fan-out ratios.

Why Networked FICON Storage Is Better Than Direct Attached Storage

  • 1. WHY NETWORKED FICON STORAGE IS BETTER THAN DIRECT ATTACHED STORAGE RON REEGER, GSS MANAGER, HITACHI DATA SYSTEMS STEPHEN GUENDERT, PHD, PRINCIPAL ENGINEER/GLOBAL SOLUTIONS ARCHITECT, BROCADE OCTOBER 3, 2012
  • 2. WEBTECH EDUCATIONAL SERIES Why Networked FICON Storage Is Better Than Direct Attached Storage With the many enhancements and improvements in mainframe I/O technology in the past 5 years, the question "Do I need FICON switching technology, or should I go with direct attached storage?" is frequently asked. This webcast explores both technical and business reasons for implementing a switched FICON architecture instead of a direct attached storage FICON architecture for mainframe attached storage. The discussion will also include an overview of the Hitachi Data Systems and Brocade solutions for mainframe environments. By attending this webcast, you’ll learn • The business and technical value of networking FICON attached storage instead of direct attached • The business and technical value of Hitachi mainframe storage capabilities • The offerings from Hitachi Data Systems and Brocade that can help you achieve the benefits of networked FICON storage
