Arms and the Man by GB Shaw ppt
1. Arms and the Man.
(G. B. Shaw)
Relating BETRAYAL in LOVE and
HYPOCRACY from the play to other events
and situations.
2. Main Themes of the Play
• Arms and the Man is a humorous play which shows the
futility of war and deals with the hypocrisies of human
nature in a comedic fashion.
• It is basically a story of Love and War.
• The play tries to tell us that aristocratic pretensions
have no place in today’s wars.
• The brave is not the one who is rich and belongs to a
“noble” family but the one who fights with a big heart
in the battlefield.
• The play also highlights human natures like
hypocrisy, dual behaviors and betrayal in love.
• The writer also mentions the class difference in society
in a mocking style.
3. What We Are Going To
Discuss??
• We are going to talk about two
main aspects of the play:
• “Betrayal in Love”.
• “Hypocrisy of People in Daily
matters”.
4. Betrayal in Love:
• “Betrayal in Love” is something that is
becoming common these days in our society.
• TV serials and soaps also plot such events where
people who claim to love each other, betray.
• Commonly in youth when there is fresh blood
running in the body, claiming true love and then
betraying doesn’t seem to be a big deal.
• Specially in Western Culture, this phenomena is
very common among the married ones also.
5. Examples of Betrayal in
Love from the Play:
• The first example of betrayal in love
from the play was what Louka did
with Nicola. She was engaged to
Nicola but she never cared for him
and finally selected Sergius not because he loved
her, instead he was wealthy and aristocrat.
• Secondly, Sergius the so called “brave” and “heroic”
soldier also betrayed Raina. As soon as Raina was out of
sight, he started flirting with Louka.
6. CLOSER (A Story of Love and
Betrayal)
• Famous Hollywood movie “CLOSER” is
also a story of love and betrayal.
• The movie features two married couples
spending their lives quiet happily.
• But then one man from a couple and a
woman from the other couple get involved in each other.
• In this movie Dan and Alice are married to each other while Larry and
Anna are husband wife.
• Just like Sergius was going to get married with Raina, Dan was
married with Alice (one of the characters of movie) but as Sergius took
interest in Louka, the same way Dan was interested in Larry’s wife
Anna and the one who suffered was Larry.
7. “Ethan Frome” by Edith Wharton.
• “Ethan Frome” a novel published in 1911 by the
award winning American author Edith Wharton
also plots a story of betrayal in love.
• The main character of the play Ethan a middle aged
man betrays his wife Zeena.
• Ethan was interested in Zeena’s maid Mattie.
• Zeena suspects Ethan’s feelings but he did not
approve that.
• When Zeena went out of city for two days, Ethan
planned to propose Mattie but his plans were ruined
by the early arrival of Zeena.
• Ethan planned to run away with Mattie but in their way they got hit into
a tree and both were paralyzed.
• Zeena now took care of both her husband and Mattie.
• Ethan and Mattie now faced the music of the betrayal they did with
Zeena.
8. • “Betrayal is the only truth that sticks”.
~ Arthur Miller
• “It is easier to forgive an enemy than to forgive a friend.”
~ William Blake
• “We have to distrust each other. It is our only defense
against betrayal”.
~Tennessee
What the World Says?
9. Hypocrisy in Daily Life Matters
• The practice of claiming to have higher standards or more
noble beliefs than is the case is called hypocrisy.
• This trait is the most common one in society.
• Actually it’s a mental condition many of us are suffering
from unaware of our habit.
• We present ourselves to be sophisticated, well mannered and
noble but actually everyone isn’t like that.
• Sometimes we behave in a different way than our actual
personality just to get someone’s attention.
• Hypocrisy destroys one’s personality because a hypocrite
has a dual personality and he couldn’t figure out in his life
that which one is the real one.
10. Example of Hypocrisy from the Play
• Raina, the daughter of Petinkoff
always presented herself as a very
sophisticated lady.
• She always talked in a high voice with
manners, but Bluntschli caught her
pretentiousness.
• Raina told that she has been pretending
to talk like this for years and no one ever caught her.
• That wasn’t Raina’s natural style but she talked like that
because she belonged to a noble family.
11. Examples of Hypocrisy from our Daily
Lives
• In our daily lives we come to a lot of examples of hypocrisy:
• In offices people behave to their bosses as if the boss is the best
person on Earth, but in actual they really don’t respect their
boss.
• Friends and colleagues also have this habit to change their
personality according to the person whom they are talking to.
• Hypocrisy is also found in our behaviors when we advise others
to be pious but we ourselves don’t tend to do that.
• This example is much common in our rural areas where
women are bound but men have liberty to do anything.
12. • “Manners are the hypocrisy of a nation”.
~Honore de Balzac
• “Politeness, n: The most acceptable hypocrisy”.
~Ambross Bierce
• “It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by
honesty and how few by deceit”.
~Noel Coward
