This document discusses the differences between coaching, teaching, and consulting. Coaching involves collaborating with clients in a thoughtful process to help them improve personally and professionally. Teaching involves sharing knowledge and experience to stimulate growth. Consulting provides expert advice to professionals expecting them to apply it. The document then presents three scenarios involving an agile coach: 1) a ScrumMaster who wants direct solutions, 2) scaling agile across an organization based on a past consultant's blueprint, and 3) qualifications to look for in hiring an agile coach.
4. WHAT IS AGILE COACHING?
“Agile Coaching is…
a collaboration with people in a thought provoking
and creative journey using coaching approaches
with an agile mindset and principles to help
individuals, teams and organisations be the best
they can be”

6. Coaching, Teaching and Consulting
Coaching - Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and
creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and
professional potential.
Teaching (Includes Mentoring)- The sharing of knowledge and
experience, within a discipline and, more generally, the provision of
stimulus to the psychological and intellectual growth of a person
Consulting - Engaged in the business of giving expert advice to
people working in a professional or technical field and expecting them
to take it.

9. Scenario 1
You recently started working with a new
ScrumMaster, but everytime you collaborate he
asks you to give solutions to his problems. Each
time you discuss coaching with him, he brings
up his annoyance with his last coach who never
gave him straight answers, just questions. He
then mumbles about ‘ Coaching mind control
techniques’
13. Scenario 2
The company has had a few pilot agile ‘squads’ and learnt a lot of valuable lessons
about what works for them. They want to scale what they are doing to full product
areas across the organisation. A highly paid consultancy created a blueprint a year ago
that told them how to do this using the ‘spotify model’ you have been brought in as an
agile coach to roll this out but be ‘pragmatic’.
17. Scenario 3
You are a hiring manager and have been asked to
recruit for an Agile Coach to help the teams
improve and the organisation to continually
evolve.
What Agile certificates would you look for?

Talk about the definition made at the coaching retreat
Key Messages
During a scrum coaching retreat a number of well know Agile coaches collaborated on what competencies are required
Over the last 14 months we have continued to refine to where we are today
The wheel shows us a balance view of what competencies could be useful when performing Agile Coaching with the green items being the core competencies
5 years ago most agile coaches i knew didn’t know the first thing about agile coaching. This was causing a real challenge within the industry with a real stress between old and new ways of working. Lately the swing has gone too far the other way with clients crying out for some guidance in how to be agile.
During this session we intend to show the power of agile coaching is in diversity and knowing what will serve the clients needs best understanding the pros and cons of any one approach
Before we start we thought we better clarify the 3 main descriptions that underpin this talk
Agility in your Agile Coach is key look for someone who has several approaches and can give examples
understand what competencies are important to you in your journey
Active community involvement tends to be a good sign
