2. POLYMERS
Polymer materials have been steadily replacing traditional materials in this sector.
Construction applications of plastics include pipes and guttering, window and door
profiles, glazing, roofing, sealants and adhesives, cement, insulation, flooring and building
panels. Civil engineering applications include geomembranes, road and sports surfaces,
building reinforcement and bridge building.
Polymer composites are multi-phase materials produced by combining polymer resins
such as polyester, vinylester and epoxy, with fillers and reinforcing fibres to produce a
bulk material with properties better than those of the individual base materials. Fillers are
often used to provide bulk to the material, reduce cost, lower bulk density or to produce
aesthetic features. Fibres are used to reinforce the polymer and improve mechanical
properties such as stiffness and strength. High strength fibres of glass, aramid and carbon
are used as the primary means of carrying load, while the polymer resin protects the fibres
and binds them into a cohesive structural unit. These are commonly called fibre
composite materials.
3. INTRODUCTION
Polycarbonates, are a particular group of thermoplastic polymers. They are
easily worked, molded, and thermoformed. Because of these properties,
polycarbonates find many applications in building construction.
Polycarbonate is a very durable material. Although it has high impact-resistance,
it has low scratch-resistance. This polymer is highly transparent to visible light and
has better light transmission characteristics than many kinds of glass.
polycarbonate can undergo large plastic deformations without cracking or
breaking. As a result, it can be processed and formed at room temperature
using sheet metal techniques. Polycarbonate, is brittle and cannot be bent at
room temperature.
4. Poly Carbonate Sheets are widely used as roofing material for skylights, dormer
windows, Greenhouses, porches, coffee shops, hotels, hospitals, bus stops and
various other commercial and public places. Owing to enhanced flexible
strength, these Polycarbonate Sheets can be easily curve and bend into simple
shapes. Further, these can be customized as per the specifications detailed by
the clients regarding design, shape, size and dimension.
