1. Maintaining a rapport with the interviewer is very important during the process of
an interview. How and why? [16]
2. Write an email to the Principal of your College asking him to introduce a greater
component of audio-visual classroom teaching for its obvious advantages. Follow
the conventions. [16]
3. Your voice is your trademark; it is that part of yourself that adds human touch to
your words and extra life to your delivery. Elaborate. [16]
4. Identify the different methods of achieving objectivity in technical writing? Illus-
trate wherever necessary. [16]
5. (a) Why is methodical scheduling imperative for putting up an effective presen-
tation? Describe the ways in which one can plan a triumphant presentation?
(b) Before a presentation, how will you try to do away with the fear factor? Elab-
orate on the strategies of staying composed before a presentation. [16]
6. (a) How do poor listening skills become a common obstacle to communication?
(b) How does the complexity of the protocol in an organization cause communi-
cation barriers? [16]
7. The Social Service League of your institution has established an artisan training
centre to train the rural youth and school drop-outs in different technical trades
so as to make the youth suitable for self-employment. Write a detailed evaluation
report on the progress of the artisan training centre. Follow the usual structure of
a report. [16]
8. Change the following Simple Sentences into Complex Sentences:

1. How Can you identify the differences between the British English and the American
English? [16]
2. Give an account of the strategies for writing a report. [16]
3. Organization, visual aids, delivery and style are the most important aspects of a
technical presentation. Explain the relevance of each of these aspects. [16]
4. When you are facing the interview, your prospective employer might be looking out
for some distinctive qualities in you. Elaborate on the employer’s expectations.

5. (a) Define the communication process. Also explain it with the help of a schematic
representation.
(b) How is it that through process of communication, collaboration and coopera-
tion occur within an organization? [16]
6. (a) In the following situations how would you express your sense of surprise?
i. A friend of yours tells you over the telephone: Listen! Our boss is hosting
a grand dinner party for us the coming Sunday.
ii. A newspaper item reports: A dead man in a funeral procession sits up
and enquires where he is being carried.
iii. Your younger sister left for school in the morning. An hour later the
doorbell rang. You opened the door only to find her standing in front of
you.
iv. A lottery ticket seller informs you: You have won the first prize in the
state lottery.
(b) Turn the following into exclamatory expressions:
i. He spoke eloquently.
ii. They tell awful lies.
iii. Kashmir is a very cool place.

7. Write a letter to the Registrar, Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, confirm-
ing the orders for the furniture items required for the Civil Engineering Laborato-

and describe the procedure.
(b) What is behavioral interview and how does it become a criterion for scruti-
nizing the character and conduct of the candidate? [16]
2. Provide short notes on the following business terms:
(a) Positive Message
(b) Neutral Message
(c) Negative Message
(d) Persuasive Message. [16]
3. (a) What is meant by communication? Describe the communication process.
(b) Analyze the role of inter personal communication in everyday life. [16]
4. Identify the main factors that should be borne in mind in order to cultivate an
effective style for report writing. [16]
5. (a) With reference to meetings, what are the responsibilities of the participants
and what are the recommended codes of conduct?
(b) Elaborate on the duties of a Chairman in a meeting? [16]
6. (a) What are the characteristics of human voice? Discuss any three of them.
(b) Communication is a dynamic interactive process. Elaborate on the different
stages of communication. [16]
7. Keeping in mind the importance of unity, coherence, balance and emphasis in
writing, prepare a well organized essay on the topic: Science is a good servant but
a bad master.

8. Rewrite the following sentences removing ambiguity or absurdity:
(a) Every now and again the businessman goes for a talk with his assistant to find
out how he stands.
(b) The accounts should be presented to the Manager for payment not later than
the last day of every month.

1. (a) Describe the communication process? How and why is the process of commu-
nication important to business?
(b) Write short notes on:
i. Eye-contact as a direct & powerful form of communication
ii. Paralinguistics as a non-verbal cue. [16]
2. Examine the steps in a Routine Business Report. [16]
3. Discuss why one should focus on technical presentations? Also describe the process
that yields an effective presentation. [16]
4. (a) Some organizations consciously use the informal network of information to
great effects. How is this possible?
(b) What are the disadvantages of grape-vine communication? [16]
5. (a) The following questions seek information. Answer them in a formal or informal
style:
i. Who will help you if you need a lot of money?
ii. Will it rain this afternoon?
iii. Shall I ask you a question?
iv. Who will be the next Vice-Chancellor?
v. How old will you be on your next birthday?
vi. Will there be a Third World War?
vii. What will you do this Sunday?
viii. Where is Bin Laden?
(b) Ask polite questions to seek information in the following situations:
i. At the enquiry counter of a Bus Station you want to find out when the
last bus for you town leaves. Ask the clerk at the counter.
ii. Ask the Manager of your bank when your application for educational loan
will be considered.
iii. A salesgirl has come to your house selling detergent powders. Ask her
how much a packet costs.
iv. Ask your friend why he has not returned the book he borrowed from you.
(c) Turn the following direct questions into indirect questions: For example,
Whats your name? (Direct Question) Would you tell me what your name
is? (Indirect Question)

6. (a) Discuss on the aspects of formal interview held by corporate organizations.
(b) Comment on the essentiality of group discussion in formal interview. [16]

8. Rewrite the following extracts from letters so as to make whatever improvements
you consider necessary:
(a) Replying to your enquiry of the 10th inst., the quotations we sent you only
relates to goods ordered during this month.
(b) We have much pleasure in handing you herewith a booklet entitled Everything
Electrical wherein you will find brief descriptions of the many articles we
supply.
(c) I beg to inform you that owing to the decease of my friend and partner, Mr.
Tom Jones, I have taken into partnership Mr. Vincent Smith, late of Robinson
& Co., London.
(d) In thanking you for your valuable and much esteemed patronage in the past,
permit us to inform you that we have recently acquired more extensive premises.
