Learning how to use our library catalog

1. What do you know about OPAC? OPAC

2. What does OPAC mean? O = Online P = Public A = Access C= Catalog

4. How does the OPAC help us? We can be more confident and independent in the library. We can find the books we need. We can do research on topics for school and for our own interest.

5. There are 4 main ways to search the OPAC…. Keyword (my least favorite option!) Author (last name, first name) Title Subject Think K-A-T-S! Spelling ALWAYS matters!

6. Let’s try to find a book… What is our best choice?

7. Click Title and you will see… 1. You can see that we have the book but what do you need to do now to find it in the library? 2. What can you see automatically about Among the Free?

8. Double Click the title to learn more… Now you can see that the book is “in” and it’s call number is BATSCI F HAD. What does that mean? Where will you find “BAT” type books?

9. Interested in more info other than just the location of the book? Double click again… 1. You can click on the author to see what else she has written. 2. See that it is part of a series. 3. Read a summary of the book. 4. See what genre it is. 5. Find out which book it is in the series.

10. Now for the fun stuff! Using the My Info tab, you can: Put books on hold (only if they are checked out) See what books you have checked out See when your books are due back Check if you have any fines

11. My Info tab…. Barcode = your library number Password = your last name

12. Please don’t lose my trust in you. I TRUST YOU TO NEVER BREAK INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S ACCOUNT

13. Once you are in “My Info”…

14. “Holds/Reserves” If a book is checked out, you can place it on hold so that when it is returned, you can be next in line for it. This does not work for books checked in!

15. Once you click “Holds/Reserve,” just choose “Save”

16. “Add to BookBag” Your Bookbag is like a list of books that you want to read in the future. It’s your reading wishlist.

17. When you are done… don’t forget to log out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

18. Just a couple of other tidbits! Search by Series Search by Call Number

19. Last thing… Look for the ebook symbol in our catalog Username: caravel Password: academy

20. Congratulations You are now officially OPAC Masters!
