Assignment # 2
Name…… ……… ……… …… ………… I.D No.…….… ………
Due date: March 13,2012 for Tue class and March 14, 2012 for Wed class
(Submit as an individual work in a separate paper including this page as a cover page and keep your copy)
1. A rectangular gate is located at the end of a rectangular way with 3-m-wide and 8-m-high which is
connected to a huge open reservoir overflowing with water as shown in Figure. The door is hinged at
its base and held closed by a straight force, F
R
, located at the center of the gate. The maximum value
for F
R
is 4000 kN.
(a) Determine the maximum water depth, h,
(b) Determine the moment that would apply to the gate.
2. A double U-tube manometer is connected to a pipe as shown in Figure. Taking the dimensions and
fluids as indicated; calculate the absolute pressure at point at A (centre of the pipe). Take Patm 101325 Pa
and the ρHg as 13600 kg/m3
.

3. A manometer is used to measure the pressure in a tank. The fluid has a SG of 0.85, and the
manometer column height is 55 cm, as shown in Figure. If the local atmospheric pressure is 96 kPa,
determine the value of h1. Note: consider the pressure as absolute pressure.
4. An inverted U-tube manometer connects pipes A and B as shown in Figure 3. The manometer
fluid is oil of density 900 kg/m3
; pipes A and B contain water. Calculate pressure difference
between A and B where pA and pB are the pressures at the pipe centres, as shown.
