1. Gerunds and Infinitives
When do we use the GERUND? (ex: doing)
o After verbs that express likes/dislikes :
ExaI like doing crossword puzzles., I like playing soccer but I hate boxing.
o After certain other verbs such as :
Would you consider doing a few extra hours?
o After prepositions :
interested in ... Are you interested in working for us?
instead of ... Would you like to walk instead of taking the bus?
good at ... Julie is good at making cakes.
before... Before leaving the office, please turn off the lights.
after ... After tidying the kitchen she went straight to bed.
o After certain expressions :
it's no use ... Ex: It's no use pleading - I won't change my mind.
it's no good ... Ex: It's no good shouting at him - he's deaf!
there's no point in ... Ex: There's no point in cooking food - nobody's hungry!
o Some phrase
have fun/ have a good (wonderful) time
I’ve a good time playing tennis
have trouble/ have difficulty

About using time or money

When do we use the INFINITIVE? (ex : to do)
o After verbs that refer to a future event :
Ex :
I want to do a course in medieval history.
o After certain verbs such as :
I agree to pay for the damage.
She refused to forgive him
like, love, enjoy, dislike, hate, don't mind, can't stand ...
admit, appreciate, avoid, consider, delay, deny, finish, imagine, involve, keep (on), mention, miss, postpone, suggest ...
interested in ... instead of ... good at ... before... after ...
want, hope, intend, swear, decide, determine, plan, promise, would like, would hate ...
afford, agree, arrange, choose, fail, happen, need, help, learn, manage, offer, refuse, seem ...
2. o After question words
He asked how to get to the temple.
She doesn’t know what to do.
o After adjectives:
glad : (glad to know that ...)
pleased : (pleased to meet you...)
disappointed : (disappointed to hear that ..)
o After 'too' and 'enough'
it's too difficult... Ex : It's too difficult to explain how it happened.
it's easy enough... Ex : It's easy enough to install. You can do it yourself.
Some verbs can be followed by either a gerund or an infinitive. Here are some examples:
