  • 9. Developing Cultural Sensi@vity We perceive the values of our culture in moral terms and therefore we tend to view other peoples’ values as morally inferior.

Seeing Culture - Social Orienta@on Individualist Collectivist independence, self sufficiency, self- interest, self-actualisa@on, privacy, tends to use “I” and “me” a lot, makes eye contact readily, rela@onships based on mutual benefit loyalty, obliga@ons, du@es-based social system, interdependence, tends to maintain group harmony at all @mes, rela@onships are perceived in moral terms (like a family link), tendency to use “we”, are reserved with “out- groups”

Seeing Culture - Power Distance Small Large equal opportunity, status is earned, individuals are encouraged to contribute to decision making (a meaning of “patient-centred care” in health consultation), interdependence between team members, individuals need to be consulted power distributed unequally, the more powerful feels a duty to take care of others (eg doctors makes decisions for patients with the patient’s best interest in mind), less powerful people are dependent on those in positions of power
