48. IN ACCELERATING THE NUCLEATION OF CRYSTALS Agriculture The nucleation of crystals is of great interest for both fundamental research and industrial applications. However, the rate of crystal nucleation remains difficult to predict. Experiments have shown that fields generated by the synthesizer enhance nucleation rates. One example is the use of for descaling drinking water. Another example is the observation that the polarised lights by the fields significantly enhances nucleation in urea solutions (nanoseconds instead of days. However, the field seems to be too weak to align urea molecules. This could be due to the light shifts the electrons in the slowly growing clusters of urea molecules and thus produce a non-uniform charge distribution on the clusters. The resulting electric polarization aligns the molecules in the clusters and accelerates the formation of needle-like crystals.
