In light of newfound crowdsourcing tools
and relatively pervasive mobile phone and
Internet connectivity, people are rapidly
expanding the scope of opportunities that
harness the power of the crowd.
Organizations and individuals alike are
developing platforms that allow the crowd to
build social movements, organize disaster
responses, and report on corruption. A most
interesting evolution of crowdsourcing is
matching, or routing, resources to the people
and efforts that need them the most, in the
moment they are needed.

This idea is to use the crowd, from the village to the nation to the world, to map
resources and send them where they are most needed. Catalysts for Change
players challenged us to push crowdsourcing tools to the global limit. While many
cards looked at platforms built and maintained by governments or non-profits, the
addition of crowdsourcing mechanisms to these programs points to a potential for
unprecedented power and outsized impact. Players suggested building platforms that
would allow individuals to track local resources, skills, and jobs, and then possibly
upload them to a global marketplace where these needs can be matched globally. The
end goal is to build efficient crowdsourced resource-routing platforms for everything
from natural resources to human resources and beyond.

Originally a Twitter-driven citizen mobilization movement headquartered in
Ghana during the height of the civil war in Côte d'Ivoire, #civsocial got
emergency supplies to the places they were needed despite the government
cutting mobile networks. Today the network continues to grow with a standby
team on Twitter, Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and Skype. #civsocial
currently supports the government in policies around crises management, and
has built Akendewa, the first tech hub in French-speaking Africa.
