Generation Peace Youth Network (GenPeace) encourages young writers and photographers (15-
30 years old) to submit photography and literary works for a published collection on peace.
Your nose can provide a befitting and comic analogy for the youth’s notions on peace. It is so
close to your eyes, and something very important for your survival and yet you do not see it
most of the time. You take it for granted, unless it runs or clogs or the cosmos conspires against
your nose by sticking an enormous zit on top of it (then you notice and try to look at it for a
long time).

For most of the youth in the country today, peace is ironically both a closely familiar and
distantly alien concept. Familiar because pop culture had romanticized it since the hippie 70s:
the anti-nuke symbol which became popularized as the peace symbol, the “no to war”
campaigns the world over, the peace songs like “Imagine” by John Lennon and that kapayapaan
song by Tropical Depression , and so on. And yet, peace is also very abstract and distant for
most of the Filipino youth. Peace is seen as simply the absence of war. Since a vast majority of
youth in the Philippines do not experience wars firsthand nor even keep abreast of national
current/historical events such as the four decades of self-determination struggle of the
Bangsamoro and another four decades of the Communist struggle, peace as a beyond war
concept is rarely reflected upon. We, as the young generation, need to reflect on and re-
imagine our notions of peace.
In 2009, GenPeace spearheaded the Philippine celebration of the International Day of Peace on
the 21st of September, where a youth documentary was created. For this year’s celebration, we
invite YOUth to send us your perspectives on peace through POETRY, ESSAYS, SHORT
STORIES and PHOTOS. There are many faces of peace and unpeace as there are many faces of
youth.
GenPeace believes that peace is not just the absence of war but is defined by something much
bigger. In the Philippine context this may mean: jobs, justice, food and freedom. Or the 6 Paths
to Peace popular among peace advocates. Or it may mean addressing historical injustices. Or
simply being able to eat three square meals a day. We encourage you to define, understand
and present peace in your own way.

Theme:
Ang tema para sa iba’t ibang categories ay lahat ng mga bagay na hindi kasya sa iyong ilong.
(Nilampasan mo kasi ang intro, kaya hindi mo nagets ito)
Ang nais ng GenPeace ay mapahinto ka at ang mga mambabasa at makapagmuni-muni ng:
“Ano nga ba ang kapayapaan? Anong ibig sabihin nito sa akin? Ano ang karahasan o giyera?
Pano ko ito naranasan, naramdaman, nakita o naisip? May nais ba akong mensahe sa mga
kapwa ko kabataan? Iba ba ang kapayapaan para sa akin at para sa ibang tao? Paano ba ako
nagising at namulat na kailangan ako sa pagbabago ng lipunan? Ano ba ang wish ko para sa
Pilipinas?”
Ang lahat o ilan (o wala) sa mga katanungang ito ang dapat lamanin ng iyong isusulat o
lilitratuhan, ang mahalaga ay: 1) iyong repleksyon sa kapayapaan o karahasan; 2) ang kaugnayan
ng iyong ideya sa pagkamit (o di-pagkamit) ng kapayaan. Kahit ang iyong ilong (at lahat ng
hindi nagkakasya dito) ay maaaring simula ng iyong repleksyon sa kapayapaan o bakit wala nito.
Categories:
Ang mga entries para sa Essay, Short Story, Poetry at Photography (para sa captions) ay maaring
Ingles o Filipino. Maaari din isumite ang mga entries sa ibang wika (halimbawa: Ilokano, Bisaya,
Maranaw, Maguindanaw, at iba pa) basta may kaakibat na pagsasalin sa Ingles o Filipino.
1. Sanaysay/Essay (2000 words max)
2. Maikling Kwento/Short Story (3000 words max)
3. Tula/Poetry (500 words max)
4. Photography/Litrato (analog o digital, raw or manipulated)
Who can participate:
Mga estudyante, propesyunal, out-of-school youth (OSY), community-based youth na may edad
mula 15 hanggang 30 taong gulang.
Contest Deadline: Ang huling araw ng pagpapadala ng entries ay sa Setyembre 5, 2010.

Judging Criteria:
Ang mga submissions ay ire-review ng GenPeace Management Committee base sa mga
sumusunod:
Nilalaman/Content (40%) Maliwanag ba ang mga argumento ng sanaysay? Maayos ba
ang istruktura ng Maikling Kwento? Akma ba ang daloy ng tula? Malinaw bang
naisalarawan ba ng litrato ang mensahe?
Creativity and Originality (40%)Mayroon bang elementong/mga ideya/execution na
bago, malikhain, kakaiba o hinog sa entry?
Youth’s Role (20%) Malinaw bang naipakita ang gaps o papel o hamon sa kabataan
upang maging peace advocate? Nailarawan ba ang kahalagahan o problema ng
kabataan sa solusyong pangkapayapaan?

Ilagay lamang sa subject line ang iyong pangalan, organisasyon, telepono, address at category
ng inyong entry. Maaring magsumite ang isang kalahok ng tig-iisang entry sa bawat category.
Photography entries should be resized ideally as attachments, but hi-res versions should be
available if chosen for publication.

May surprise prizes ang mga mapipiling entries. Shempre, hindi ko sasabihin, dahil surprise nga
e. At… diba OK ma-publish ng libre? Mayroong certificates ang mga naglathala ng mapipiling
entries. Pag-aari pa rin ng may-akda ang mga entries ngunit pinapahintulutan ang GenPeace
para sa Creative Commons (tingnan ang link na ito ng cc by-nc-sa) na copyright upang
maipalimbag ang mga entries sa isang aklat. Ang aklat na ito ay magsisilbing popularization at
advocacy tool ng Generation Peace Youth Network.
