Introduction






Eyes are the most important organs in the
face.
Loss of eye or disfigured eye has a severe
impact on individuals psychology.
The goal




Maxillo facial prosthetics- “the branch of

prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and or
replacement of the stomatognathic and craniofacial
structures with prostheses that may or may not be
removed on a regular or elective basis”.


Ocular prosthesis


Orbital prosthesis

A maxillofacial prosthesis that
artificially replaces an eye
missing as a result of trauma,
surgery or congenital absence .
The prostheses does’t replace
missing eyelids or adjacent skin ,
mucosa or muscle.



A maxillofacial prosthesis that
artificially restores the eye ,
eye lids and adjacent hard
and soft tissues.


History
First artificial eye were made by
Egyptians ( 2500 B C )
Used in mummification process &
made from precious stone , silver ,
gold.
“AMBROSE PARE” – first to use of
artificial eyes in humans.
Glass material.
PMMA
In 1944 a dentist created an acrylic
eye for his son.
Today 90 % of ocular prostheses
are made of acrylic plastic.

Cleaning of eye lids with baby
shampoo
Clean the secretions from eye
lids
Cleaned before insertion with
a mild soap or baby shampoo







Never soaked in alcohol ,
bleach.
Never sterilize in an
autoclave
Too much handling

Remove the prosthesis as
necessary
Store it in water or soft
contact lens saline solution.
