Definition: It is a timed, planned extraction
regimen involving deciduous teeth, followed
by extraction of the permanent teeth in order
to alleviate crowding as well as the duration
of fixed mechanotherapy.
History: Robert Bunon (1743)was the first to
describe serial extraction.
Kjellgren coined the term ‘ serial extraction’
Nance is considered as the father of serial
extraction in the USA.
Other pioneers have been : Hotz, Tweed,
Dewel and Jack Dale.
Definition: It is a planned sequential
extraction regimen involving deciduous
teeth, followed by extraction of the
permanent teeth in order to alleviate future
crowding as well as the duration of fixed
•Nance method : Extraction of deciduous
first molars, followed by first premolars and
then deciduous canines
•Tweed method : similar to the above except
that extraction sequence may involve the
deciduous laterals also
Contra-indications of Serial extraction:
1) Skeletal Class II and Class III
2) Deep overbite
3) Class I cases with minimal arch length
Advantages of Serial extraction:
1) Minimal fixed appliance treatment
2) Relatively less compliance from the
Disadvantages of Serial extraction:
1) Thorough diagnosis is needed
2) Bite deepening usually occurs
3) It becomes a two-stage treatment
Serial extraction in Class II malocclusions:
Usual procedure may be carried out , but
only in the upper arch.
