Polytechnic 'reject' wins Harvard scholarship
Thu, May 06, 2010 The Straits Times
By Amelia Tan
HE WAS once rejected by Singapore Polytechnic (SP), but Indonesian student Kuriakin Zeng subsequently went on to make history at the institution, not once but twice.
Last year, he became the first SP student to score straight distinctions for all of his 33 modules in his electronics, computer and communication engineering diploma course.
Last week, he became the first student from the polytechnic to be accepted into Harvard College, where he will do a liberal arts course - with the bonus of having a full scholarship from the
Ivy League university.
Those are some achievements for a student whose grades of As and Bs, in his Indonesian high school leaving examinations in 2003, were deemed not good enough for SP. He made the cut
only after acing the GCE O levels as a private candidate here two years later.
Mr Zeng, who came to Singapore from Tanjung Pinang in Bintan five years ago, said studying in the United States was an impossible dream because of the expenses.
The only son and youngest child of a retired mechanic and a housewife who live in Bintan, he has four sisters aged between 28 and 34. Three of them are working in Singapore. All of them,
except for the eldest, studied in Singapore.
'Growing up, I thought someday I may be able to study at the National University of Singapore. But even that would be difficult as I would need a scholarship or grant. Never would I have
thought that I could go to the US,' he said.
He was encouraged to apply to American universities by his lecturers, who were impressed with his academic and co-curricular achievements.
It was a bumpy ride for a determined young man who was first rejected by SP in 2003. He then spent two years working as a salesman and a manager in a store selling spare parts for diesel
boats back home, in order to save up enough to come to Singapore.
Upon gaining admission to SP, he had to take out a loan of $7,000 from a bank for his tuition fees, and paid back the sum by taking on several part-time jobs, including working as a waiter
and cleaning houses, and also with prize money awarded for good results. Eventually, the hardworking Indonesian even saved up enough each month to give his parents an allowance.
Mr Zeng juggled work and studies with co-curricular activities like guitar and Rotaract club, and represented SP in robotics competitions. He also went on community service trips to the
Philippines.
Explaining why he was motivated to do so much, he said: 'I come from a place where there are not a lot of opportunities. When I came here and saw all the things I could do, I didn't want
to waste any time.'!
