I am pleased to welcome you to The 1st Global Social Venture Conference in China. This marks the
beginning of a series of conferences on social ventures that will be held in China and in the U.S. It is
also representative of our mutual interest in creating Global Harmony through social entrepreneurship
in partnership with Shanghai University, the University of International Business and Economics, and
Rutgers Business School – Newark and New Brunswick. We hope you will find this an exciting and
rewarding conference and we look forward to getting to know you better.

In the 21st century, Social Entrepreneurship is one of the major forces to bring social change,
community improvement, and entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities in developed and
developing nations. It attracts attention from the government and community sectors. Nevertheless, it is
a relatively new business and academic topic in China despite that China is a historic nation featured by
its modern socialist market and traditional community-oriented culture. In light of this, the 1st Global
Social Venture Research Conference is organized in Shanghai, China through the collaboration
between (i) The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development (CUEED) of Rutgers
Business School, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey from USA, (ii) Graduate Office. MBA
Center and Global Management Education Institute of Shanghai University in Shanghai, and (iii)
Business School of the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. The conference
is also co-organized by Renmin University’s Graduate School and Shanghai’s International Studies
University’s MBA Center, and sponsored by Prudential Financial, Inc., Newark, NJ, USA.
Intelligence, Experience and Insights in Social Entrepreneurship will be shared and discussed
among elite global and local scholars, executives of leading corporations, leader and representative
from global and local academic bodies, more than 20 China’s social entrepreneurs and related media
bodies. The 1st Global Social Venture Research Conference which is probably the first 5-day
symposium (19-23 November, 2009) in Mainland China for achieving the following:
1) a dialogue among scholars and practitioners regarding social entrepreneurship concepts and
issues in the global local context,
2) the establishment of a research network for thought leadership and knowledge generation in
social entrepreneurship, and
3) the cross-sector and cross-disciplinary planning of future partnership and activities in
academic, community and business sectors.

21 世纪，“社会企业与社会创业”是产生社会改变、社区进步、创业以及改
革机遇的主要力量之一。尽管“社会企业与社会创业”正引起世界上多个政府以
及社会的高度重视，但是在中国这个以社会主义下的市场经济为特色和一直重视
以社会为中心的传统文化下， “社会企业与社会创业”还是在我国商业社会、事
业单位和学术界中是一个很陌生的商业与学术话题。

因此，美国纽约的罗格斯大学商学院 (Rutgers Business School - RBS)城市创
业与经济发展中心（ The Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic
Development，简称“CUEED” 中国上海大学研究生部和 MBA 中心与管理教
）,
育研究院，与中国北京外经贸大学国际商学院联合主办 “首届中国国际社会企业
与社会创业研究会议” 。此次会议并得到中国人民大学研究生院、中国上海外国
语大学 MBA 中心作为高校协办方。美国纽约 Prudential Financial, Inc., Newark
是这次会议的白金赞助方。在会议期间将有来自海内外的著名学者，中美的著名
企业高层，海内外学术团体领导，如亚洲社会企业学院总裁和中国的社会企业发
展中心代表，20 多位中国的社会企业家，和相关媒体于 2009 年 11 月 19 至 23
日在上海共同分享和探讨“社会企业与社会创业”的智慧、经验、视野。

这个“首届国际社会企业研究会议”很可能是国内首个探讨“社会企业”的
研讨会。我们期望通过这个会议，从中可以达到以下目标：
1) 与学者与实践家面对面对话，交流有关在国际和本土环境中社会创业的
概念和问题；
2) 建立社会创业与企业中思想领导力以及知识革新的研究网络；
3) 计划产生跨领域、跨学科的学术、社会、商业团体中的未来伙伴和系列
活动。
