1. Internships
Master of Science in Product Management (MSPM) internships provide a unique opportunity for
industry partners to gain early access to Carnegie Mellon University Master of Science in
Product Management (MSPM) students – those enrolled in the first and only graduate program
dedicated to educating today’s product managers.
We offer an opportunity to hire our students for a required summer internship (May to August)
as part of their curriculum. Our students come to this one-of-a-kind program with an average of
five years of work experience. They will have completed half of their academic requirements –
mostly in business and product management courses – before they begin their summer
internship. And close to half of our students accept offers made to them by their summer
internship employers.
Why hire a summer intern?
More companies today are discovering the benefits of internship programs. Your company will
benefit from an internship program if it’s a priority for your business, solidly structured, and
provides students with the supervision they need to be successful. By providing adequate training
before the program begins or by hosting an intern orientation, you’ll see even better results. The
more resources your company is able to put toward its internship program, the more competitive
it will be. And the more competitive the internship program, the stronger the applicant pool.
Here are a few benefits of hiring an MSPM intern:
1. New perspective on organizational issues. Interns often challenge “the way we’ve
always done it” mentality and bring new ideas to a company. Interns can be good at
questioning processes and can often identify a better way of doing things.
2. It’s a trial period that could lead to something more. An internship is a great way to
see how much potential a student has in the field and to assess an intern’s potential
employment fit with your company. You’ll get to see their skills and work ethic in action
– and you might choose to bring them on as employee after graduation.
3. Help with projects or tasks that you’re struggling to complete. An interested
candidate takes on an internship in hopes of learning something meaningful by applying
their classroom learning to a real problem and accomplishing something to include on
their resume or discuss in future job interviews. Give them real, meaningful work that
will help your organization run smoother and accomplish more.
4. Gain brand advocates. Hiring an intern helps spread the word about your company. If
you’re an impressive internship supervisor and mentor, your interns will probably talk
favorably about their experience with their peers and friends.
2. Some recent projects MSPM interns have worked on:
• For a fintech enterprise software product: take a new software product to the next phase by
working on a public launch with paid clients, expanding product offering to other segments,
and prioritizing and deliver various modules within the product
• For a B2C digital transformation environment: conduct stakeholder interviews and identify
problem statement, develop roadmap and ideate KPIs, and deliver an MVP, synthesize the
data for V2
• For an enterprise software company: explore a new API business model for a software
products company
• For a B2C software company: conduct primary and secondary market research for exploring
a new market
• For a B2B technology company: perform competitive analysis (markets served, features,
pricing, partnerships)
• For an early-stage technology company: measure product market fit for products, validate
product strategy, identify a feature to increase market size
CMU recognizes the pressing need for great product managers
Product management roles have grown 32% in the last two years alone – that’s five times the
average job growth rate in the U.S. It’s one reason why we created the Master of Science in
Product Management degree. This program is a joint venture between two of our most respected
schools — Tepper School of Business and School of Computer Science. The 12-month program
provides a thorough, challenging and balanced curriculum that includes the technical skills,
business acumen and leadership traits you seek.
Who are CMU MSPM students?
Our students know what they want. They could have chosen many paths to become a product
manager, but they chose our program because of their commitment to becoming the best at
product management. Our graduate students have an average of five years of experience. So,
they know how to go to work and get things done, with many having worked on commercial
products. Most have already obtained a degree in computer science, engineering, or have
obtained strong technical skills with a different degree. They come to CMU with above average
scores in admissions tests (GMAT or GRE top 10%) and are committing to a one-year, on-
campus degree to further their careers. We have a terrific representation of both men and women,
with students from all over the world.
3. Where have MSPM students had past internships?
Our students have interned at leading companies large and small, in B2B and B2C companies.
How can you engage with our students to hire them for a summer internship?
We welcome the opportunity to work with you to connect you with our students for a potential
summer internship.
Ways to engage:
• Come to campus and hold a social event where you can meet all of our students and
discuss your company and the opportunities to work there.
• Post an open job on our Handshake job posting system.
• Review our CV/resume book and select students you would like to speak with by phone
or via video conference.
• And more…
Other opportunities
We have several ways to connect our industry partners with the MSPM outside of our Capstone
Project. If you are interested in participating in career fairs with our students, on-campus
interviews, guest lecturing, giving, or becoming a student mentor, please contact us.
We look forward to hearing more about your projects and working together in the future.
