Editor's Notes
Hey Guys.. I am Ishan and he is my co-founder Vaibhav and we are here to talk to you about how we at CorruptionTrak are trying to solve the biggest problem in the world. Corruption!
Is it really a big problem?Well, here is a map by Transparency International depicting corruption throughout the world. Darker red color means more corruption, yellow means less. Clearly it is a problem that a large part of the world is facing today. (11 sec)Now in this sea of red a country that is close to my heart is India. Having lived there for 18 years I have experienced corruption first hand and it is something that has bothered me all along. So how big the problem is in India?
Wow those are big numbers. (19 sec)
Is anyone doing anything about it? People in India are not sleeping over it. Last year in July a movement against corruption took over India. It was a peaceful and non-violent movement with protests throughout the nation in support of a stronger form of a anti-corruption bill at the parliament. (19 sec) Millions of people were out on the streets and onto social media to show their support for the movement.
A big part of the movement was the involvement of youth from colleges and schools who came out on the streets to fight against this social evil. This whole movement was lead by Anna Hazare who has dedicated his life for selfless causes such as this. At the age of 74 year he has become a youth icon in the country.
I reached NUS and was having coffee with a friend in our Dorm kitchen talking about this recent movement and how we ourselves have experienced corruption and we decided that we will start a parallel protest in Singapore… haha no.. We are technology people and we saw how technology affected revolutionary movements around the world. We wanted to empower everyone to fight corruption and support anti-corruption movements from the comfort of their homes. This inspired us to build CorruptionTrak. It’s a crowd sourced platform for reporting cases of corruption. We got so excited about the idea that we built the a working protoype of an Android App overnight and started talking to people for their views on the idea and the product. We got some great feedback and we put it all back into the app. In November we officially released the App on the Android app store.
Its looks something like this. You can fill up a form to report a case of corruption by adding the relevant details. All the reports are geo-tagged with your location, which we show on a nice heat map. But Android holds a very small percent of smartphone market in india.
So we released the website earlier this January. Similar to the app you can report cases of corruption here. We also pull in reports made through twitter using #corruptionTrakhashtag. We anonymize the reports before they appear on the feed. 3000 hits in one night
We are also open to expanding the platform to other countries to help out weed this social evil from all walks of life but We need more support from all of you! If you can help us out in anyway possible do drop us a line at admin@corruptiontrak.comThe collected reports are the medium to enable public authorities to pinpoint geographical areas of significant corruption and identify the nature of corruption in each of these areas.Useful in initiating specific investigative action against these acts while also serving as a social deterrent against petty corruption. Can be used by media bodies to monitor these reports and publish these stories.
These are some of the reports we received. A person in Bhopal had to pay 50 USD bribe to retrieve his own birth certificate. Another person in Chennai refused to pay bribe to a traffic cop and instead paid the fine.
My favorite feature of our product is the alert system. Wherein journalists, cops or anyone can setup alerts to be notified of any corruption reports in their areas. We also make the data freely available through our API’s so that anyone can do their own analysis on it.
We are also open to expanding the platform to other countries to help out weed this social evil from all walks of life but We need more support from all of you! If you can help us out in anyway possible do drop us a line at admin@corruptiontrak.comWe aim to extend our initiative to other countries by building partnerships with organizations and/or individuals who are willing to head the movement in their own countries. Our Idea, brand, technology is open for use to anyone.
So are we too small to tackle a problem this big? We don’t think so! We are young, we are crazy and we don’t know the impossible. We believe if we all work together we can put an end to corruption worldwide!
