- Brainstorm what you know about HEROES, EPICS, MYTHOLOGY, HOMER, ODYSSEY Begin in left column, jot down anything that comes to mind Video will show some images that might help you brainstorm You may realize you know more than you thought
- -Begin with the EPIC GENRE -Slang for word “epic” – “very great” or “impressive” Epic has become associated with video games, music, television, and more The basic idea is that they all have a story of heroism For example in the Lion King, Simba defeats Mufassa and saves the kingdom
- -Epic Poem is the original form of the word “epic” Hero who has defended the country or culture Rhapsodist is a singer Would travel to different villages singing these songs – typically couldn’t read or write Think of Taylor Swift on tour, only Taylor Swift might have better fashion and I think she can read or write
- Homer has the earliest known literature in Europe Wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey – both of which we will discuss He was blind, but managed to travel to different villages telling his tales
- Why do we need to read this? History! Homer learned these tales passed down from previous generations Still relevant themes The characters within these epics are still revered in Europe – temples, statues, worshipped by people

- -Let’s talk about the Odyssey Basically, It begins “in the middle of things” Odysseus has finished fighting in the Trojan War fought various obstacles for three years on his trip home ended up with Kalypso on Ogygia
- Book one opens up with Homer telling us about Odysseus He then goes on to set the stage: Odysseus’ home has been taken over by suitors Telemachus and Penelope are waiting for Odysseus to come home Athena has asked her father (Zeus) if she can help get Odysseus off the island of Ogygia Athena comes to Ithaca to visit Telemachus and advise him to go search for his father
