How do people learn at work? The 4 D’s of Learning
My research spanning over 15 years shows that learning at work
is not just about being taught or trained but happens in many different ways.
I call these the 4 D’s of Learning

How much do people learn from each of the 4 D’s of Learning?
My recent survey shows that people learn far more from
DISCOVERY, DOING and DISCOURSE than they do from DIDACTICS.

How much value do people place on the different ways of learning?
11
And yet another survey shows that people VALUE the learning from DOING,
DISCOVERY & DISCOURSE far more than they what they learn from DIDACTICS.
So what does this mean for organisations today?

L&D
builds, enables and
supports a new
organisational learning
culture and mindset.
Individuals
take responsibility for their own continuous

responsibility for the
growth and development
of their people in their daily
working live

From “course order taker” to adviser

An individual will make use of a variety of platforms and tools
for their continuous learning and development. An LMS is just one of those
tools but it no longer the hub of enterprise learning.

9. Why Modern Workplace Learning?: 4 more reasons
No longer such thing as a job for life
means that as working lives become longer
and people have many more jobs in their
working life, the need for lifelong and
continuous learning will increase
Information Explosion
& Decay
means that individuals will need to be
constantly replacing out-of-date knowledge
with new knowledge in a continuous process
of unlearning and learning
Automation
means that although some jobs will be replaced,
many more will be changed in some way, so
individuals will need new skills
to remain employable, and organisations will need
people with the relevant skills
to remain competitive in their market.
The post-Covid workplace
will require new ways of working and learning.
Remote workers enjoy much more
flexibility and autonomy and
they will be looking to retain these
benefits in the future
9
Here are more reasons why a modern approach to
workplace learning is now required.
