  2. 2. Causes of the Spanish American War <ul><li>One cause was the publication of a stolen letter (the de lome letter) by W.R. Hearst that had been written by the Spanish minister at Washington, in which that diplomat expressed contempt for McKinley. </li></ul><ul><li>Another cause was the sinking of the U.S. battleship The Maine in the Havana harbor on February 15, 1898, which killed 260 men. </li></ul><ul><li>Another cause were the eyewitness reports by members of the U.S. Congress on the reconcentrado policy (concentration camp) in Cuba. </li></ul>

What was the Spanish American War? <ul><li>The Spanish American War was a war that was fought between the United States and Spain for the Control of Cuba. </li></ul><ul><li>The war was not long at all, it only lasted six months. </li></ul><ul><li>The war was ended by the signing of the Treaty of Paris. </li></ul>

Timeline <ul><li>February 16,1896-Valeriano Weyler becomes captain general in Cuba and orders thousands of Cubans herded into concentration camps under his reconcentration policy. </li></ul><ul><li>December 7,1896- President Grover Cleveland declares limited patience with Spain’s oppression of Cubans. </li></ul><ul><li>March 4 1897- William McKinley is inaugurated. </li></ul><ul><li>April 6, 1897-Theodore Roosevelt is named assistant secretary of the Navy. </li></ul>

Spain Surrenders to the Philippines. </li></ul><ul><li>October 1,1898- The first meeting in Paris to end the war. </li></ul><ul><li>October 28,1898- President McKinley decides that the U.S. will keep control of the Philippine Islands. </li></ul><ul><li>December 10,1898- The Treaty of Paris officially ends the war. </li></ul><ul><li>April 1,1899- The United States signed a peace treaty with Spain. </li></ul>

The Results and Consequences <ul><li>The Treaty of Paris resulted in the United States gaining control over Guam and Puerto Rico. </li></ul><ul><li>It also resulted in Cuba gaining its independence from Spain. </li></ul><ul><li>The United States also kept control over The Philippines in exchange for twenty million dollars. </li></ul>
