2. In the past 2 years, over a dozen states have considered legislation limiting the availability of junk food in schools. Some people feel that banning junk food is totally unnecessary and is an over reaction to a small problem. Others feel that a ban on sodas and junk food in America's school would help solve the obesity problem. Today’s teenagers are three times more likely to be overweight than teenagers 20 years ago.
3. Many people disagree with a ban for various reasons. Junk food eaten in moderation is okay. Also, a ban could lead to kids smuggling, hiding and hoarding food. Finally, there are many schools that rely on money earned from sales of soft drinks vending machines to help pay for field trips and special activities.
4. I agree with those leaders who want to ban these harmful snacks and drinks from schools. Healthy foods can taste just as good if not better than junk food.Junk food can cause all kinds of problems such as childhood obesity which puts children at risk for diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. Also foods with lots of sugar can prevent a student from being able to pay attention in class. Schools would be setting a good example by supplying only healthy choices to kids. Parents would still be able to decide what kids can eat at home. And though some schools make money from the sales of these types of foods, they shouldn't continue to make money at the risk of their students' health.
5. Kids spend most of their day at school and schools are places of learning. It is here that they should learn to make healthy choices. Yes, some kids may struggle with the ban and sneak junk food in, but there are always kids who break the rules and that doesn't mean we shouldn't have rules. I think schools should ban junk food and sodas because they are bad for kids and schools need to help kids become smarter and healthier. As for the schools that rely on the money from vending machine sales, they should try other fundraisers. They may consider having a Turkey Trot like we did at Antelope Ridge. This raised money for the school and encouraged kids to be physically active.
