But what is still more remarkable or worthy of attention is
this, that the line in which the strata of this mountainous
region are ele vated or depressed, seems to preserve the
same direction with this line of general division for the
species of country ; for while the perpendicular strata or
edge-beds of this alpine region may be found inclined or

2. heading both to the north-west and south east, the general
direction of S.W. and N.E. is still preserved in the
stretching line of the strata which is horizontal ; at least,
this is the case much more frequently than it is otherwise.*
