My name is Jim Stroud
and I have a little
something for the
Sourcers, Recruiters
and Talent Acquistion
Leaders out there!
There is a shortage of
women in tech and its
been that way for a while.
There are a lot of recent
articles talking about this.
And sourcing female
software developers is
harder in some places
than others.
If you try to find an article explaining
how to find female software
developers, no such luck.
So, I thought,
why not make
one? So, I did.
And here it is!
“HOW TO” (FIND OR SOURCE)
(FEMALE OR WOMEN) –MEN
(DEVELOPERS OR ENGINEERS)
Ways to get it done!

podcasts
BASIC STRATEGY:
• There are a lot of podcasts online covering all sorts of topics.
• Look for guests on podcasts that might prove a worthy hire.
• More often than not, the podcast show will mention who
their guest is and what they will be talking about.
• Also, network with the podcast host as they are probably
well connected if they have a long-running podcast.

1. Search for mentions of software engineers and
the pronoun “she” in hopes of finding female
developers who have been guests on podcasts.
2. Check out the results! I found several good leads
this way.
3. Automate the search so you only have to do it
once.

Image Search
After adding my search, I want
to refine my results to pictures.
So, I click the “Images” link.
So, I mouse over “Settings” and
click “Advanced Search.”
Hmm… I’m not excited
about these results.
I add my search terms and
additional criteria as shown.
At this point, I scroll through the
results and click on the images that I
think belong to female software
developers. When I click the photos,
more often than not, I get a name,
job title and the company they work
for.
NOTE:
I like these results but, still not
in love. I decide to tweak my
search a bit more.
I changed the search (as shown in
the search box) and I like these
results a lot more! FYI, I did not
return to Advanced Settings.
Still, after reviewing them, I
consider a couple more
tweaks.
Tweaks:
• I change the “aspect ratio” to Square and I
get a different set of leads. Yay!
• I also would consider additional searches
like “she is a software developer”
Another tweak, of course, is to search without
the “Advanced Search” refinements. And last,
but not least, click on these suggestions as they
may lead to more of what you are looking for.
I also recommend searching outside of Google as
well. Check out the suggestions Bing Images
gives like “Black female Software Engineer” and
“Chinese Female Software Engineer.” Great for
even more diversity sourcing!
Bing has filters similar to Google
and by leveraging them, I get
more of what I want. Cool.

article. Maybe you want to recruit the
people who tweeted it and/or recruit

How to Find Female Software Developers #sourcing #recruiting

  • 1. Hey! My name is Jim Stroud and I have a little something for the Sourcers, Recruiters and Talent Acquistion Leaders out there!
  • 2. There is a shortage of women in tech and its been that way for a while.
  • 3. There are a lot of recent articles talking about this.
  • 4. And sourcing female software developers is harder in some places than others.
  • 5. If you try to find an article explaining how to find female software developers, no such luck.
  • 6. So, I thought, why not make one? So, I did. And here it is!
  • 7. “HOW TO” (FIND OR SOURCE) (FEMALE OR WOMEN) –MEN (DEVELOPERS OR ENGINEERS) Ways to get it done! By: Jim Stroud | www.JimStroud.com 5
  • 8. #1Source from podcasts BASIC STRATEGY: • There are a lot of podcasts online covering all sorts of topics. • Look for guests on podcasts that might prove a worthy hire. • More often than not, the podcast show will mention who their guest is and what they will be talking about. • Also, network with the podcast host as they are probably well connected if they have a long-running podcast.
  • 9. 1 2 3 1. Search for mentions of software engineers and the pronoun “she” in hopes of finding female developers who have been guests on podcasts. 2. Check out the results! I found several good leads this way. 3. Automate the search so you only have to do it once. NOTE: source: www.listennotes.com

  • 13. After adding my search, I want to refine my results to pictures. So, I click the “Images” link.
  • 14. So, I mouse over “Settings” and click “Advanced Search.” Hmm… I’m not excited about these results.
  • 15. I add my search terms and additional criteria as shown.

  • 17. At this point, I scroll through the results and click on the images that I think belong to female software developers. When I click the photos, more often than not, I get a name, job title and the company they work for. NOTE:
  • 18. I like these results but, still not in love. I decide to tweak my search a bit more.
  • 19. I changed the search (as shown in the search box) and I like these results a lot more! FYI, I did not return to Advanced Settings. Still, after reviewing them, I consider a couple more tweaks.
  • 20. Tweaks: • I change the “aspect ratio” to Square and I get a different set of leads. Yay! • I also would consider additional searches like “she is a software developer”
  • 21. Another tweak, of course, is to search without the “Advanced Search” refinements. And last, but not least, click on these suggestions as they may lead to more of what you are looking for.
  • 22. I also recommend searching outside of Google as well. Check out the suggestions Bing Images gives like “Black female Software Engineer” and “Chinese Female Software Engineer.” Great for even more diversity sourcing!
  • 23. Bing has filters similar to Google and by leveraging them, I get more of what I want. Cool.

  • 32. Searching the URL on Twitter reveals the accounts that have shared the article. Maybe you want to recruit the people who tweeted it and/or recruit the people that follow them?
