4. Agenda:
20/04/16 4
• Background
• Definition
• Netnography as a research method
• Issues and Challenges
• Conducting netnography
• Comments & Questions
• References
5. Background:
20/04/16 5
• Recent cultural and technological developments, especially in the field of ICT,
affect the practices of conducting research
• Traditional research methods seem unconventional and lack the ability
to collect multiform digital data
• research settings started to move to online environments
• computers and other technology started to mediate interaction between
the users
• Netnography is a research method purposefully developed to meet the
changing requirements of online qualitative research, and to match the
cultural change towards a merged view of offline and online environments
• Developed from the foundations of ethnography in the late 1990s
• Originally developed for marketing research
• Suits also many other fields of science, where research questions require
qualitative analysis of online sites, platforms, communities and user
behavior
6. The Definition:
20/04/16 6
• Kozinets (2010, p.60): “participant observational research based in online
fieldwork” which “uses computer-mediated communications to arrive at the
ethnographic understanding and representation of a cultural or communal
phenomenon”.
• Merged from two words – Internet (net) and ethnography:
• Referring to a utilization of ethnographic principles and techniques in
online settings
• Netnography is also called to online ethnography (Wittel 2000), virtual
ethnography (Hine 2000), digital ethnography (Murthy 2008), webnography
(Puri 2007) and expanded ethnography (see e.g. Beneito-Montagut 2011, p.
719)
7. Netnography:
20/04/16 7
• Netnography is a wider approach consisting of multiple methods, approaches
and techniques
• Choosing the right methods or combination of methods and techniques
depend on the research settings and the strengths of the researcher
(Kozinets 2007, p.132)
• Also a joint research together with more traditional methods is possible
(see “blended netnography” in Kozinets 2010, p.65).
(adapted from Saunders 2009, p. 108)
8. Netnography:
20/04/16 8
• Biggest differences in data collection and analysis:
• Kozinets (2007, p.132) suggests three types of data that can be collected:
1. data directly copied from the computer-mediated
communications
2. data collected observing the online environment
3. data collected through interviews (online or offline)
• Includes:
• copying multiple forms of interaction (e.g. textual, video, audio)
• taking screen captures, field-notes
• self-experiencing
+ crawling and scraping (Huhtamäki, Lasrado, Menon, Kärkkäinen &
Jussila 2015, p. 4)
• Authors (see e.g. Kozinets 2007, p.132; Beneito-Montagut 2011, p.720)
argue that flexible data collection strategy and multiform data is needed to
achieve sufficiently rich data for netnography to reveal its full potential.
9. Criticism:
20/04/16 9
• Method itself is also constantly evolving
• Theoretical establishments and legitimacy of the method are still under
development (Maclaran & Catterall 2002, p.325)
• How much ethnography is needed for netnography?
• The virtual nature and ease of access to online data make the method
susceptible to subjectivity or shallowness of the research (see e.g. Kozinets
2007; Beneito-Montagut 2011)
• Just browsing the Internet and collecting data is not netnography!
• Research ethics (see e.g. Maclaran & Catterall 2002; Garcia et al. 2009;
Kozinets 2007; Kozinets 2010, p.140)
• new challenges concerning the identities or anonymity of actors taking
part in the research
• publicity and privacy of the online data
10. Conducting netnography:
20/04/16 10
(adapted from Kozinets 2010)
• Formalize research problem
• Search for potential online
environments
• Select suitable online platforms,
communities, sites etc.
• Practical implementation
• Multiform data
• Process and refine data
11. Participant observation roles

13. Comments and Questions?
20/04/16 13
• General comments and tips:
• Study the method before conducting the research
• Review former netnographies with criticism
• Remember that the nature of the method is flexible -> in the end the
researcher determines how to implement!
Thank You!

Really like this design, its nice and simple. Unfortunately the part where the chain links
braze, and where most damage would be found, is not dealt with.

Thanks Phillip for your comment. I agree, this unit cannot provide check of the "round" part
of the chaim member. I'll think how to do it…

23. Verkostoanalyysi &
sosiaalinen media
• Sosiaalisen median avulla voidaan kerätä ohjelmallisesti
dataa esimerkiksi toimijoista, toimijoiden välisistä yhteyksistä
ja tuotetuista sisällöistä
• Verkostoanalyysissä tavoitteena on hahmottaa verkostojen
rakennetta ja dynamiikkaa. Menetelmän avulla voidaan tehdä
havaintoja sekä yksittäisten toimijoiden rooleista verkostoissa
että verkostojen rakenteesta ja niiden muutoksesta.
• Verkostoanalyysi ja sosiaalinen media ovat tutkijan
näkökulmasta varsin ihanteellinen vastinpari: sosiaalisen
median toimijat muodostavat yhteyksiä toisiinsa sekä
keskustelevat, tuottavat, jakavat ja kommentoivat sisältöjä.
Sosiaalisen median digitaalisuus tarkoittaa käytännössä sitä,
että kaikki siinä käytävä vuorovaikutus on tallennettavissa.
20/04/16 23Huhtamäki & Parviainen 2013
24. Verkostoanalyysi
menetelmänä
• Vuorovaikutussuhteiden määrällinen tutkiminen vaatii erilaisia
analyysimenetelmiä kuin perinteinen tilastoanalyysi. Parhaiten
tämän tarpeen täyttää verkostoanalyysi
• Verkostoanalyysi ei ole yksi menetelmä vaan joukko
menetelmiä ja teorioita toisistaan riippuvien ilmiöiden
käsittelyyn.
• Sen juuret ovat 1700-luvun puolivälissä alkunsa saaneessa
graafiteoriassa. Graafiteorian avulla voidaan tutkia
matemaattisesti ja järjestelmällisesti monimutkaisia
vuorovaikutuskuvioita, joiden tarkastelu tilastollisin
menetelmin tai vaikkapa ääneen kuvailemalla olisi
mahdotonta. (Wasserman & Faust 1994.)
20/04/16 24Huhtamäki & Parviainen 2013
25. Verkostoanalyysin hyödyt
somen tutkimuksessa
• Verkostoanalyysin anti sosiaalisen median tutkimukseen
perustuu käyttäjien monipuolisen digitaalisen
vuorovaikutuksen ja siitä kertyvän rikkaan, suhteellisen
helposti käsiteltävän datan yhdistelmästä.
• Pelkistäen voidaan sanoa, että työmäärällä, joka kuluu
kymmenen henkilön vuorovaikutuksen tutkimiseen perinteisin
menetelmin, voi verkostoanalyysin avulla tutkia vastaavaa
tietoa tuhansista henkilöistä. Sosiaalinen media on tässä
suhteessa tiedon aarreaitta, jonka potentiaali ihmisen
toiminnan kuvaamisessa ja ymmärtämisessä on valtava.
20/04/16 25Huhtamäki & Parviainen 2013
26. Verkostoanalyysin
perusteita
• Verkostoja visualisoitaessa suuntamaton yhteys kuvataan
tavallisesti pelkkänä viivana tai kaksipäisenä nuolena, mutta
suunnattu yhteys on tavallinen, yksipäinen nuoli.
20/04/16 26Huhtamäki & Parviainen 2013
29. Verkostojen visuaalinen
analyysi
• Visuaalinen analyysi on tärkeää kahdesta syystä: 1) se antaa
verkostojen tutkijoille mahdollisuuden tehdä havaintoja
sosiaalisten yhteyksien muodostamista rakenteista sekä 2)
keinon näiden havaintojen jakamiseksi muille (Freeman
2009).
• Verkostojen visuaalinen analyysi voidaan nähdä informaation
visualisoinnin ja visuaalisen analytiikan jatkumona.
– Informaation visualisoinnissa tavoitellaan käyttäjän kognition
vahvistamista ilmaisuvoimaisilla, usein vuorovaikutteisilla
näkymillä, jotka tarjoavat tarkastelijalle mahdollisuuden nähdä
datan edustama ilmiö uudella tavalla (Ware 2004).
– Visuaalinen analytiikka (Wong & Thomas 2004) taas pyrkii
edistämään tieteellisen sekä informaation visualisoinnin
menetelmiä monitieteisesti siten, että visualisoinneilla voidaan
tukea intuitiivista tapaa hahmottaa kokonaisuuksia ja tuottaa
uutta tietoa. 20/04/16 29Huhtamäki & Parviainen 2013
30. 1-, 2- ja monimoodiset
verkostot
• Verkostot voivat olla yksi-, kaksi- tai monimoodisia.
• Yksimoodisissa verkostoissa (engl. unimodal, ks. Hansen ym.
2011, tai one-mode, ks. Wassermann & Faust 1994) kaikki
verkoston solmut ovat tyypiltään samanlaisia, esimerkiksi
Twitter-palvelun käyttäjiä.
• Kaksimoodisen verkoston (engl. bi- modal tai two-mode, ks.
Hansen ym. 2011) solmuja on kahdenlaisia, vaikkapa esim.
Twitter-palvelun käyttäjät ja käytetyt hashtagit.
• Monimoodisissa verkostoissa solmuja on useampaa kuin
kahta tyyppiä. Yleissääntönä voidaan todeta, että moni-
moodisten verkostojen määrällinen analyysi on yksi- ja
kaksimoodisia hankalampaa.
