Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions The Lord’s Prayer 5th Petition: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Memorization Verses: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.
LSB 706 --Just make up a tune. Love in Christ is strong and living,                       Binding faithful hearts as one;      Love in Christ is true and giving.          May His will in us be done. 2.  Love is patient and forbearing,          Clothed in Christ's humility,      Gentle, selfless, kind and caring,          Reaching out in charity. 3.  Love in Christ abides forever,          Fainting not when ills attend;      Love, forgiving and forgiven,          Shall endure until life's end. Colossians 3:12-14 12Put on therefore, as God's elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; 13forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye: 14and above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.
Blot Out All My IniquitiesPs 51:9  Cross out all words that may be considered a sin or something that would be wrong in God's eyes. What do the remaining words say? Write them in order. Double check at 1 Pt 3:18
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.“1/4 This part now relates to our poor miserable life, which, although we have and believe the Word of God, and do and submit to His will, and are supported by His gifts and blessings is nevertheless not without sin. For we still stumble daily and transgress because we live in the world among men who do us much harm and give us cause for impatience, anger, revenge, etc. Besides, we have Satan at our back, who sets upon us on every side, and fights (as we have heard) against all the foregoing petitions, so that it is not possible always to stand firm in such a persistent conflict.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.“ 2/4 Therefore there is here again great need to call upon God and to pray: Dear Father, forgive us our trespasses. Not as though He did not forgive sin without and even before our prayer (for He has given us the Gospel, in which is pure forgiveness before we prayed or ever thought about it). But this is to the intent that we may recognize and accept such forgiveness. For since the flesh in which we daily live is of such a nature that it neither trusts nor believes God, and is ever active in evil lusts and devices, so that we sin daily in word and deed, by commission and omission by which the conscience is thrown into unrest, so that it is afraid of the wrath and displeasure of God, and thus loses the comfort and confidence derived from the Gospel; therefore it is ceaselessly necessary that we run hither and obtain consolation to comfort the conscience again. But this should serve God's purpose of breaking our pride and keeping us humble. For in case any one should boast of his godliness and despise others, God has reserved this prerogative to Himself, that the person is to consider himself and place this prayer before his eyes, and he will find that he is no better than others, and that in the presence of God all must lower their plumes, and be glad that they can attain forgiveness. And let no one think that as long as we live here he can reach such a position that he will not need such forgiveness. In short, if God does not forgive without ceasing, we are lost.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.“ 3/4 It is therefore the intent of this petition that God would not regard our sins and hold up to us what we daily deserve, but would deal graciously with us, and forgive, as He has promised, and thus grant us a joyful and confident conscience to stand before Him in prayer. For where the heart is not in right relation towards God, nor can take such confidence, it will nevermore venture to pray. But such a confident and joyful heart can spring from nothing else than the [certain] knowledge of the forgiveness of sin. But there is here attached a necessary, yet consolatory addition: As we forgive. He has promised that we shall be sure that everything is forgiven and pardoned, yet in the manner that we also forgive our neighbor. For just as we daily sin much against God and yet He forgives everything through grace, so we, too, must ever forgive our neighbor who does us injury, violence, and wrong, shows malice toward us, etc. If, therefore you do not forgive, then do not think that God forgives you; but if you forgive, you have this consolation and assurance, that you are forgiven in heaven, not on account of your forgiving, -- for God forgives freely and without condition, out of pure grace, because He has so promised, as the Gospel teaches, -- but in order that He may set this up for our confirmation and assurance for a sign alongside of the promise which accords with this prayer, Luke 6, 37: Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. Therefore Christ also repeats it soon after the Lord's Prayer, and says, Matt. 6,14: For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, etc.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.“ 4/4 This sign is therefore attached to this petition, that, when we pray, we remember the promise and reflect thus: Dear Father, for this reason I come and pray Thee to forgive me, not that I can make satisfaction, or can merit anything by my works, but because Thou hast promised and attached the seal thereto that I should be as sure as though I had absolution pronounced by Thyself. For as much as Baptism and the Lord's Supper appointed as external signs, effect, so much also this sign can effect to confirm our consciences and cause them to rejoice. And it is especially given for this purpose, that we might use and practise it every hour, as a thing that we have with us at all times.

LP 5th Petition (Forgive): 4 Types Judicial The forgiveness one expereiencesuponbeingjustified by faithis once for all, and eternal. Accessedonly on faith in Christ regarding salvation and heaven. Paternal Describes that which is broken with our Father when we fail to forgive others. Speaks of "family" forgiveness. This forgiveness is contingent upon the child of God (a) Confessing their sin or specifically naming the sin, agreeing with God that it is in fact a grievous sin, and expressing a willingness and desire to forsake it, attitudes and actions that are well summed up in the word repentance (see 1Jn 1:9; Jn 13:4, 5, 6, 7,8, 9, 10; Mt 6:12-notes cf Pr 28:13) (b) Forgiveness of debts (sins) others have against us (Personal forgiveness - see the next kind of forgiveness.)
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): 4 Types Personal Jesus conditions our forgiveness and restoration to fellowship with our Heavenly Father on our willingness to forgive others. In fact paternal/personal forgiveness is the only topic that Jesus elaborated on in the "Lord's (Disciple's) Prayer" in the Sermon on the Mount. See notes on the actual prayer in Mt 6:12 and Jesus' further explanation in Mt 6:14,15-notes; Mt 18:21-35; Luke 6:37; Col. 3:13-note; Eph 4:31, 32-note)(b) Personal forgiveness has a vertical dimension—we must release the person to God. This can happen anywhere at anytime. Jesus taught, “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven my forgive you your sins.” (Mk 11:25) (c) Personal forgiveness has a horizontal dimension—we must confront the offender and forgive if he repents. “Be on your guard. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.” (Luke 17:3) Ecclesiastical Restoration of fellowship with the church) 2Co 2:5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 2Th 3:14, 15. This forgiveness assumes a prior discipline by the church body and an evidence of a repentant heart on the part of the one disciplined. The purpose of discipline is restoration, and forgiveness assumes repentance and restoration.
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): What it isn’t Personal forgiveness is not: Pretending that what was done is not wrong Having to forget and be naïve as to someone’s future habits and actions. A result of “getting even” through personal retribution. Taking the moral high ground to appear better than the person wronged. Having to maintain constant contact or communication with the person
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): What it is Personal forgiveness is: The only petition God elaborates on specifically in its connection to God’s disposition/forgiveness on His children. An assurance that you yourself are forgiven by the Father in Christ A reminder of our fallen natures and a humility lest we also fall (Gal. 6:1) A reminder of our need for those external seals and guarantees to our faith: baptism, lord’s supper, worship, prayer, and church.
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): Kingdom Analogy  “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[h] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.    26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.    28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[i] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.    29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’    30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.    32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.    35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your hearts
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): Trinity Kingdom Our God is a King who has knighted us towards all the high callings previously mentioned acknowledging kingship, heralding the King’s will, Protecting the weak and the poor in humility In this petition, we recognize that Christ is our ultimate knight who is lanced for our sake; his blood is apheimi’ed with our sin. We are given the armor of the Spirit of God, and the constant word on our lips, to declare personal forgiveness to all who will hear it
LP 5th Petition (Forgive): C.S. Lewis But even if he is absolutely fully to blame we still have to forgive him; and even if ninety-nine percent of his apparent guilt can be explained away by really good excuses, the problem of forgiveness begins with the one percent guilt which is left over. To excuse what can really produce good excuses is not Christian character; it is only fairness. To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. This is hard. It is perhaps not so hard to forgive a single great injury. But to forgive the incessant provocations of daily life—to keep on forgiving the bossy mother-in-law, the bullying husband, the nagging wife, the selfish daughter, the deceitful son—how can we do it? Only, I think, by remembering where we stand, by meaning our words when we say in our prayers each night ‘forgive our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us.’ We are offered forgiveness on no other terms. To refuse it is to refuse God’s mercy for ourselves. There is no hint of exceptions and God means what He says.

SS: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
M confess What do we confess when we pray this petition? We confess that we sin every day and deserve nothing but punishment. Prov. 28:13 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Ps. 19:12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. What do we ask for in this petition? We ask that our Father in heaven would for Christ's sake graciously forgive our sins.  Ps. 51:1-2 Have mercy on me, 0 God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.  Ps. 130:3-4 If You, 0 Lord, kept a record of sins, 0 Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.  Luke 18:13 God, have mercy on me, a sinner. • Pray: O dear God and Father, do not judge us, for in Your sight no person living is justified. Neither number us among sinners, because we are so ungrateful for Your unspeakable goodness to body and soul. Daily and often we stray, and we sin more than we know and are able to understand. Psalm 19:13. Consider not how good or evil we are, but remember Your infinite mercy granted to us in Christ, Your dear Son. Amen. (Luther).
T therefore need God's forgiveness Why do we include a prayer for forgiveness of sins in these petitions to our heavenly Father? We are not worthy of the things for which we pray and have not deserved them. We therefore need God's forgiveness so that we may pray to Him confidently and in good conscience.  "Where the heart is not right with God ... it will never dare to pray.... A confident and joyful heart can come only from the knowledge that our sins are forgiven" (Large Catechism III, 92). Gen. 32:10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant.  Ps. 32:5 I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord"-and You forgave the guilt of my sin. • Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, I pray to You for Jesus Christ’s sake and at His bidding that You would not look upon my sins, nor on their account deny my prayer which I offer unto You. To be sure, I am worthy of none of the things for which I pray, nor have I deserved them; for I daily sin much, and indeed deserve nothing but punishment. But graciously grant them all to me nevertheless. So will I also heartily forgive and readily do good to those who sin against me, a poor sinner. SO help me by the grace of Your Holy Spirit. Amen. (Zorn).
W: forgive What does God want us to do for those who sin against us? Our heavenly Father wants us to forgive and to do good to those who sin against us. Matt. 6:12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have for given our debtors.  Matt. 18:21-22 Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.“ Eph. 4:32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. • Pray: Father of pity, and God of all comforts, who has reconciled me to Yourself by the death and sufferings of Your dear Son, let not sin in me, nor the provocation of it, ever break this happy union that is between us. As Your mercy was in Christ reconciled to Your justice, so let me not abuse Your mercy, and again expose myself naked to Your just wrath. Give me resolutions never more to offend You, and let Your grace keep them unviolated. Your arms are open to receive me. Let not my hard heart or lack of repentance cause You to close them. I can now boldly come to the throne of Your grace, my past sins shall not frighten me from entering into this new covenant of peace, of which Your Son was the blessed Messenger. Amen. (Gerhard, 1582-1637)
Thshows that we truly believe What does it show when we forgive others? It shows that we truly believe that God has forgiven us.  "Inasmuch as we sin greatly against God every day and yet He forgives it all through grace, we must always forgive our neighbor who does us harm, violence, and injustice [and] bears malice toward us.... If you do not forgive, do not think that God forgives you" (Large Catechism III:94-95). Matt. 6:14-15 If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.  Bible narratives: Joseph forgave his brothers (Gen. 50:15-21). The parable of the unmerciful servant (Matt. 18:23-35). • Pray: I know, O Lord my God, I am unworthy that You should enter beneath the roof of the temple of my soul, because it is all empty and dead. There is in me no worthy place where You may lay Your head. But since from Your loftiness You humbled Yourself for our sake, please humble Yourself now toward my humility. And as it seemed good to You to lie in the cavern and in the manger of dumb beasts, so also now graciously lie in the manger of my dumb soul, and enter into my defiled body. Just as You did not refuse to enter into the house of Simon the leper, and there to sit at a meal with sinners, so also graciously enter into the house of my humble soul, which is leprous and sinful. Just as You did not feel loathing for the polluted lips of a sinful woman who kissed Your feet, so also do not loathe my even more defiled and polluted lips and unclean tongue. Amen. (John Chrysostom, c. 347-407)
Leviticus 19:34The stranger that sojourneth with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt: I am Jehovah your God. Sing it! LSB 845 Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found;Brought here together by Christ’s love,by love are we thus bound. With grateful joy and holy fearGod’s charity we learn;Let us with heart and mind and soulnow love God in return. Forgive we now each other’s faultsas we our faults confess; And let us love each other wellin Christian holiness. Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease;Be God’s the glory that we seek,be ours God’s holy peace. Let us recall that in our midstdwells God’s begotten Son;As members of his body joined,we are in Christ made one. No race or creed can love exclude,if honored be God’s name; Our family embraces allwhose Father is the same.
Popcorn Prayer: And Forgive Us our sins As we forgive Those who Sin against us…
Conclusion And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. We confess that we sin every day and deserve nothing but punishment.  We ask that our Father in heaven would for Christ's sake graciously forgive our sins. Our heavenly Father wants us to forgive and to do good to those who sin against us.
The Lord’s Prayer: 6th Petition: And lead us not into temptation. Next Time…(10/7)

11.09.30 the lord's prayer 5th petition-and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us

  • 3.  Blot Out All My IniquitiesPs 51:9  Cross out all words that may be considered a sin or something that would be wrong in God's eyes. What do the remaining words say? Write them in order. Double check at 1 Pt 3:18
  • 8. 1 John 4:12 12No man hath beheld God at any time: if we love one another, God abideth in us, and his love is perfected in us:  Sing it! LSB 884 Tune: O Jesus Christ, true lamb of God, you take the sin of the world away. EEF|GAB|B-A|B-. 1 Lord of all nations, grant me graceTo love all people, every race,And in each person may I seeMy kindred loved, redeemed by Thee.2 Break down the wall that would divideThy children, Lord, on every side.My neighbor's good let me pursue;Let Christian love bind warm and true.3 Forgive me, Lord, where I have erredBy loveless act and thoughtless word.Make me to see the wrong I doWill crucify my Lord anew.4 Give me Thy courage, Lord, to speakWhenever strong oppress the weak.Should I myself the victim be,Help me forgive, remembering Thee.5 With Thine own love may I be filledAnd by Thy Holy Spirit willed,That all I touch, where'er I be,May be divinely touched by Thee.
  • 9. Prayer Prep: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors…” Confession is asking forgiveness for what you have done wrong. Since God graciously forgives you, you must forgive all those who have wronged you. Read Matthew 6:14-15 Read Matthew 18:21-35 Are you feeling convicted or guilty inside about anything right now? Ask God to forgive you and ask Him what you need to do to make it right. Read Luke 23:34 Is there anyone who has wronged you against whom you still hold resentment? You need to forgive that person. Let go of any resentment or grudge you have against him/her.
  • 10. Prayer Journal Using your notes from this week, spend some time writing to God, prayer journal-style. A prayer journal is page/notebook that contains your: prayer requests Bible study notes verses that apply to a situation you are going through daily confessions goals revelations Reflection ideas….. (tell Jesus what you’ve found /thought about this week): As you meditate on these verses, what jumps out at you? How are the verses you read related? Do you see a consistent theme in the verses you read? Why do you think those specific words were chosen? What is God teaching you through these verses? What are you learning about God's character and nature? What are you learning about who you are in Christ? What are you learning about what God's plan for you?

LSB 843 ccel.org/cceh/0011/001122a.mid 1 "Forgive our sins as we forgive," You taught us, Lord, to pray; But You alone can grant us grace To live the words we say. 2 How can Your pardon reach and bless The unforgiving heart That broods on wrongs and will not let Old bitterness depart? 3 In blazing light Your cross reveals The truth we dimly knew: How trifling others' debts to us; How great our debt to You! 4 Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls And bid resentment cease; Then, by Your mercy reconciled, Our lives will spread Your peace.

  • 20. We are given the armor of the Spirit of God, and the constant word on our lips, to declare personal forgiveness to all who will hear it

Amen. (Luther).
  • 26. Amen. (Zorn).
  • 28. 347-407)

  • 30. Popcorn Prayer: And Forgive Us our sins As we forgive Those who Sin against us…
  • 31. Conclusion And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. We confess that we sin every day and deserve nothing but punishment.  We ask that our Father in heaven would for Christ's sake graciously forgive our sins. We are not worthy of the things for which we pray and have not deserved them. We therefore need God's forgiveness so that we may pray to Him confidently and in good conscience.  "Where the heart is not right with God ... it will never dare to pray....
