Dear Mr. Henshaw,
ABC Group Advertising, suggested I contact you regarding the possible public relations opening
in your firm.
As an editor/writer for NY’s city magazine, I’ve developed my talent and experience as a public
relations writer. Because the staff is very small, I’ve worn a number of hats, including:
developing the editorial format and individual story concepts, writing numerous articles, editing
copy, laying out the magazine, and supervising production.
Prior to my current position, I was highly involved in the public relations industry, working for
Jones & Jones, where I prepared numerous press releases and media guides, as well as managing
several major direct mail campaigns.
My high degree of motivation has been recognized by my previous employers who have quickly
promoted me to positions of greater responsibility. I was promoted from assistant editor to editor
of Alexandria Monthly after only five months.
I am eager to talk with you about the contribution I could make to your firm. I will call you the
week of April 25th to see if we can find a mutual time and date to get together and discuss the
possibility.
Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
Cordially,
Mary Davison

Dear Mrs Smith
Application for the post of General Manager
I am very interested in the above advertised position and enclose my CV for your consideration. I
am pleased to say that I know one of your previous Board members, Joe Brown, and that he
recommended that I apply for the post.
You will see from my CV that I have over ten years of management experience in the hospitality
sector and have experience of running mid-sized hotels and tourist attractions. I feel confident
that my excellent people and leadership skills, flexible attitude and commercial awareness would
make me ideally suited to this post. In addition to my general management experience, I can also
deliver training courses and prepare financial budgets.
I have superb communications and customer service skills and would describe myself as
unflappable, even in the most difficult situations. I have excellent IT skills and developed an

data and figures to owners and senior managers and have no issue with working unsocial hours.
I believe that I would be a valuable addition to your management team and give a professional
face to the company. If you would like to take my application forward, I would be delighted to
attend for interview to provide further information on my experience and abilities.
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely

I am going to be visiting New York this March (from the 12th to 18th). I will call your office

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:
I am writing in reply to the classified ad you posted seeking to fill the position of Graduate
Student Advisor for the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program at ABC College.
Having earned my Master of Arts degree in Academic Advising from XYZ University, I
understand the importance for informed academic counseling and program planning in a higher
education environment.
I have also experienced, first-hand, the comforting effect of being able to contact an adviser who
genuinely cares for the professional growth and success of students.
Prior to my graduate studies, during my career as an electrician, I was elected Chairman of the
Executive Board which sat as the union’s representatives to the apprenticeship advisory board. In
this capacity, I was able to be an effective advisor to apprentices who were experiencing
scholastic problems which threatened their future in the industry. I particularly enjoyed working
with older apprentices who were seeking a career change and had problems adjusting to the
obligations of work, school, and family life.
I believe that both my educational background in Academic Advising and my work-related duties
of counseling and advising students enrolled in learning programs qualifies me for consideration
for the position of Graduate Student Advisor. I look forward to discussing how my skills can be
of value to ABC College as it prepares to move into the new millennium. Thank you for your
time, consideration, and forthcoming response.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:
"I am writing to you in regard to the position of billing manager that you have posted on your
company website. I worked with Sloane Greene in the billing department of XYZ Enterprises for
several years before taking a hiatus to raise my children.
When I mentioned I was returning to the workforce, she recommended I contact you about this
position, as she felt that I would be an excellent fit for your organization.
At XYZ, I worked closely with Sloane to convert our billing system to handle the increase in
sales volume the company was experiencing. I oversaw the seamless transition when our
deliverables doubled in less than six months. I have successfully managed both small and large
billing departments, but am most comfortable in an environment like that at your company. I feel
that my experience would be an asset to Bright Enterprises, and would appreciate the opportunity
to meet with you regarding the open position.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.“
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Dorza,
Our paths first crossed several years ago when you spoke to my marketing class at the University
of Mid Nebraska. At that time, you challenged each of us to make a difference in the world and
told us of your early struggles to not only obtain a degree but also launch your company.
Since that time, I've followed the rapid growth of your cutting-edge marketing firm. This past
year I read that Edgie had been awarded an Addy for the innovative marketing campaign you
created for WarmStone Creamery.
Your advice to find an internship in my senior year was invaluable to me. Upon graduation, my
mentor at that firm introduced me to ACB Multimedia. For the past three years, I have worked in
all facets of marketing: internet, multimedia, and print. I would now like to explore where my
education and experience would be of the greatest value to a firm located in the St. Louis area.
I do remember you telling us you would always be happy to answer questions, so I kept your
business card. I will contact your secretary in a few days to arrange a meeting at your
convenience. I will gladly clear my schedule for whenever you are available. I look forward to
seeing you again and gaining your insight into my career path.
Thanks so much for the great advice you gave me while at college, which has shaped my career
so far.
Sincerely,
Mary Smith 15

The American Company has been recognized as one of the best places to work in the country for
IT professionals.
You have deliberately set out to create this culture, and it shows! It is my understanding that you

processes. Some of my business process knowledge includes accounting, finance, facilities,
inventory control, budgeting, vendor management and various operational processes.
I have experience with merger/acquisition events, high growth challenges, technology
replacement projects and IT process improvement.
I have delivered large technology projects on schedule/on budget and in alignment with the
business strategy. Companies I have worked for include ICM, HEP, IBX and SED.
I would appreciate an opportunity to talk with you or someone in your organization to see where
