Using Op Art to
Assemble an Op Art piece using proportional relationships
to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
Record proportional relationships (ratio to decimal to
percent) using Op Art.

• Ellsworth Kelly
• Ask students how many have ever been to the DIA? How many to an art
museum outside of Detroit? How many of them like art? How many know
what Op Art is? Discuss Ellsworth Kelly and other Op Art artists. Show a brief
slideshow of Optical Art and discuss how math is incorporated into art.
What is a percent? (part of 100). What are some other ways we can
represent parts of a whole? (fractions and decimals).
• 100 square grid on ledger paper
• 5 different colors of 1” squares
• Op Art Slideshow
• Students will create an op art
piece of their own on a 100
square grid using up to 5 colors
provided. If they choose to leave
spaces blank, the blank spaces
will count as white. At the bottom
of the sheet, there are columns for
Color, Number, Fraction, Decimal
and Percent, where students will
convert each based on numbers
of each color used in their art

• Students who demonstrate strong
grasp on concept prior to
beginning this concluding lesson
can challenge themselves by
excluding the outer ring, leaving
them with a 64 square grid.
• To reinforce relationship, students
who finish early can complete
worksheet. Other students can
complete for homework.
