### Using op art to teach fraction, decimal

1. 1. A SIOP Lesson Plan Jodi Weiler Using Op Art to Teach Fraction, Decimal, and Percent Equivalents
2. 2. Assemble an Op Art piece using proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Content Objective: Language Objective: Record proportional relationships (ratio to decimal to percent) using Op Art.
3. 3. • Op Art (optical art) • Ellsworth Kelly • Ratio • Percent • Decimal Vocabulary:
4. 4. • Ask students how many have ever been to the DIA? How many to an art museum outside of Detroit? How many of them like art? How many know what Op Art is? Discuss Ellsworth Kelly and other Op Art artists. Show a brief slideshow of Optical Art and discuss how math is incorporated into art. What is a percent? (part of 100). What are some other ways we can represent parts of a whole? (fractions and decimals). Building Background:
5. 5. • 100 square grid on ledger paper • 5 different colors of 1” squares • glue • pencils • calculators Materials: Supplementary Materials: • Op Art Slideshow • Worksheet
6. 6. What does math have to do with art???
7. 7. Detroit Institute of Arts Louvre Paris, France Museum of Modern Art New York, New York
8. 8. Art that uses geometric patterns to confuse or excite the eye. What is Op Art?
9. 9. Color For a Large Wall 1951 Ellsworth Kelly
10. 10. • Students will create an op art piece of their own on a 100 square grid using up to 5 colors provided. If they choose to leave spaces blank, the blank spaces will count as white. At the bottom of the sheet, there are columns for Color, Number, Fraction, Decimal and Percent, where students will convert each based on numbers of each color used in their art piece. Activity/Application Name: Color Number Fraction Decimal Percent Total = 100
11. 11. • Students who demonstrate strong grasp on concept prior to beginning this concluding lesson can challenge themselves by excluding the outer ring, leaving them with a 64 square grid. • To reinforce relationship, students who finish early can complete worksheet. Other students can complete for homework. Differentiating Instruction NUMBER OF SQUARES OUT OF 100 FRACTION DECIMAL PERCENT EQUIVALENT DOLLAR AMOUNT 1 75 3/4 0.75 75% \$0.75 2 1/5 0.2 3 30 0.3 4 12/25 48% 5 60 6 37% 7 0.56 8 44 9 23/25 10 7/10 11 91% Fill in the missing percent, decimal, and/or fraction for each of the following: NAME: ___________________________ DATE: ____________________________
