School Librarian’s Workshop, formerly a
print publication, became a digital only
publication with the August/ September
2011 issue. It continues to be a bi-
monthly newsletter serving K-12 school
librarians and the varied and changing
needs they face.
10. What’s it all for?
• Advocacy: Promotion: Public Relations,
Advertising and Marketing
– Public relations involves building relationships
with the learning community inside and
outside the school. Advertising makes people
aware of your program's goals, while a
marketing plan focuses on convincing these
people to take action.
Finally, promotion involves a ongoing
commitment to the advancement of
ideas and programs.

Century Skills & Services?
11
During 2011, Colorado schools began
implementing the newly revised
Colorado Academic Standards, which
incorporate workforce readiness and
21st century skills.

Commons?

Learning Commons?

From Library to Learning
Commons
Over the summer [2014?] Del Valle
High School underwent a major
renovation to transform its library
into a Learning Commons, an
innovative concept which is
becoming popular in schools and
universities to refer to a welcoming
multi-use student-centered space
providing access to 21st century
technology and resources.
22. What Does an Effective Frontline
Advocate for School Libraries Do?
• Frontline advocacy is all about informing and persuading. It’s about partnering with your school
librarian and administrators to place your school library media center in the spotlight at every
opportunity. It’s about saying and doing the little things on a daily basis that give others positive
feelings and an appreciation of your school’s library, and doing the big things when times are
hard. Don’t wait for a crisis to advocate for your library. Practice it every day, and, when there is a
special issue or concern, you’ll be very good at it.
• Once you try it, you will realize that advocating for your library is actually pretty easy. Click for
